1959 GMT: Britain and France have been drawing up a resolution to put to the Security Council in what they call a "contingency measure" in case Kadhafi's bid to regain control of all of Libya turns into a civilian bloodbath. But there is no official proposal to put to the council yet, widely expected to be opposed by Russia and China. "We need to look at it from all sorts of angles. It is not a thing to be taken lightly," South Africa's UN ambassador Baso Sanqu says.
1952 GMT: "There were lots of issues that were discussed this morning, the no-fly zone was one of the issues," UN under secretary general Lynn Pascoe tells reporters after briefing the 15-nation Security Council about the turmoil in Libya and the rest of North Africa.
1947 GMT: Libya's rebel leadership demands to be recognised as "legitimate" during talks at the European Parliament, and urges the West to impose a no-fly zone.Mahmud Gebril, Libya's former planning minister and a founding member of the provisional national council, calls for "military assistance without direct military intervention."
"Empowering the people to continue their armed struggles against Kadhafi can be done by different means."
1856 GMT US Marine Corps commander James Amos tells Congress that Libya's air force would pose only a "modest" threat to international efforts to impose a no-fly zone."Probably the greatest threat are their helicopter attack forces, in my assessment," he said, adding "I'm unfamiliar with the depth of their air defenses, but they have some."Britain and France have been drawing up a UN draft resolution on a no-fly zone, and talks are going on behind the scenes between members of the UN Security Council, diplomats say.
1851 GMT Three hardline Shiite opposition groups in Bahrain say they have formed a coalition to push for the fall of the Sunni royal family that rules the tiny Gulf state."We hereby declare a tripartite coalition between the Wafa, Haq and Bahrain Freedom Movement that has chosen to fight for a complete downfall of the regime, and the establishment of a democratic republic in Bahrain," a statement given to AFP by Haq leader Hassan Mashaima says.Bahrain has been the scene of anti-government protests for 23 days, making it one of the flashpoints of unrest that has swept the Arab world, toppling autocratic regimes in Egypt and Tunisia.
1840 GMT A former Libyan foreign ministry official says the situation in the western Libyan city of Zawiyah is "very critical," with forces loyal to Moamer Kadhafi making a final push to recapture it."Round every corner there are people shooting. He (Kadhafi) wants to take it before Wednesday. The international community must do something," Mourad Hemayma told AFP by telephone from Cairo.Hemayma, who has become a spokesman for the rebel national council since resigning, said members of his own family had been killed and wounded in the city, besieged for days by Kadhafi's tanks and troops.Zawiyah is 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Tripoli."The situation is very critical in Zawiyah. It's been surrounded and bombarded daily by soldiers," Hemayma said. "We cannot let this go on."
1833 GMT Dutch Defence Minister Hans Hillen says three soldiers held captive in Libya since February 27 were "being treated well.He told the Dutch parliament that a diplomat recently visited the three and found them in good spirits."They are in good form, they have enough to eat and drink.... Intensive diplomatic consultations are underway for their release," he said. Two Dutch pilots, one a woman, and a loadmaster were taken captive in Sirte in the north of Libya during an aborted attempt to evacuate two civilians by navy helicopter.
1823 GMT Opposition website Kaleme.com reports Iranian security forces turned out in large numbers at several of Tehran's main squares to head off anti-government protests. It said they fired tear gas several times and blocked roads to Revolution Square in central Tehran.Foreign media have been banned from on-the-spot reporting of any unauthorised gatherings.
1813 GMT Witnesses say security forces fired warning shots to disperse protesters in the city of Ataq, in southern Shabwa province, and a Yemeni policeman was hit by a stone.Hundreds of schoolchildren had taken to the streets of the city for a third straight day to demand that President Ali Abdullah Saleh quit.Schools also were shut in the main southern city of Aden due to calls for protests, a ministry official says.
1811 GMT AFP reporter Danny Kemp and AFP video reporter Thom Walker heard heavy bursts of shelling for 30 minutes at a distance from Ras Lanuf, Libya. They went closer. They were within ear shot for about an hour and they could still hear the shelling in the distance when they got back to Ras Lanuf. At one point, Danny Kemp counted 10 shells in two minutes. In another five minute period, six shells. When the shelling was heaviest, rebels dived to the ground, then jumped up and shouted Alluh Akhbar before having to hit the ground again. One shell fell about 50 metres away from Thom Walker.
1801 GMT Italy's top lender UniCredit says it is ready to suspend voting rights for its Libyan shareholders if EU agrees to widen sanctions to include Libyan state assets abroad, a bank spokesman says. The Libyan state is the biggest shareholder in UniCredit with a 7.582-percent stake, including 4.988 percent held by the Libyan central bank and 2.594 percent by the Libyan Investment Authority, a sovereign wealth fund.Libya's stake is reportedly valued at 3.6 billion euros ($5.0 billion).Libya also holds a 2.01-percent stake in Italian defence and aerospace giant Finmeccanica, 7.5 percent in Juventus football club and an estimated 0.5 percent in energy major ENI, the top foreign oil producer in Libya.Finmeccanica and Juventus told AFP they were also ready to freeze the stakes held by Libya if the European Union agreed to do this.
1753 World oil prices slide amid assurances by Saudi Oil Minister Ali Naimi that supplies of crude were "very adequate."New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in April fell $1.12 to $104.32 a barrel, a day after soaring to $106.95 -- the highest level for 2.5 years. In late London trade Tuesday, Brent North Sea crude for April was down $2.23 to $112.81.Naimi tells Saudi Arabia's state SPA news agency that recent crude prices "do not reflect the fundamentals of supply and demand in the oil market as much as they are caused by financial speculation and a negative and unrealistic take on supplies."
1748 GMT The European Commission unveils new policy guidelines towards its Arab neighbours, linking four billion euros in aid to political and economic reform. The guidlines will be submitted to EU leaders convened in Brussels Friday to discuss the crisis in Libya and the Arab world."Partners who move faster on political and economic reforms should be able to count on greater support from the EU," says Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso.
1746 GMT Opposition website Kaleme.com says Iranian security forces fired tear gas at anti-government protesters in Tehran."Security forces blocked the roads to Enghelab (Revolution) Square (in central Tehran) and fired tear gas at people several times as they tried to stage anti-government demonstrations," the website said.
1740 GMT - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the US will push for women to be included in the transition to democracy in Arab countries.Clinton spoke during the 2011 International Women of Courage awards at the State Department during International Women's Day."The United States will stand firmly for the proposition that women must be included in whatever process goes forward. No government can succeed if it excludes half of its people from important decisions," she said.

1727 GMT Greek authorities still searching for 11 Bangladeshis who fled a ship in Crete evacuating them from Libya.Forty-nine passengers secretly disembarked from the Ionian King in Souda Bay over the weekend. Three died in the attempt, and another 35 were found and taken to hospital.
1715 GMT AFP reporter Danny Kemp said there was heavy shelling 13 kilometres west of Ras Lanuf. In a period of about five minutes, six shells exploded -- some several hundred metres from the road.
Initially lots of rebel fighters were going up on foot towards the front, but as the shelling got closer, they started to run away from what appeared to be a concerted effort by government forces.
About four ambulances could be seen gathered to pick up the wounded. Could hear their sirens wailing over the phone.
Rebels retreated after a concerted effort by Kadhafi guys.
On the front, rebel fighter Kamal Sheikh from Brega told AFP:
"Kadhafi is a mad man. He's raining fire down on us but we are human beings. We are Libyans. They are shooting anybody," he said, carrying a Kalashnikov.
1705 GMT After a day of continued air strikes on the edge of the rebel-held town of Ras Lanuf, here's a recap on some of the main developments in the Libya situation from the ground and around the world.
-- Libya's airforce stepped up strikes today in Ras Lanuf where heavy shelling could be heard on the frontline. A series of raids earlier left one person wounded and struck a block of flats.
-- The Arab League said foreign ministers will meet on Saturday for crisis talks on the situation, including the option of a no-fly zone. The Secretary General of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, Ekemeleddin Ihsanoglu, meanwhile has backed a no-fly-zone.
-- The European Union has tightened sanctions against Tripoli, targeting five "entities" including the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA) -- the overseas investment vehicle for oil revenues -- and the Libyan Central Bank.
-- Rebel leaders said Kadhafi's people offered talks with the opposition -- which they rejected. The Libyan government dismissed as "rubbish" the idea that such an offer had been made.
