Dennis Chew sobs as he speaks of "Ah Hea"
Channel NewsAsia - Monday, December 29
Many viewers are shock to learn that their talented and favorite MediaCorp actor Chew Chor Meng is suffering from Kennedy's disease (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). The revelation sparked public's curiosity towards the disease and many also found themselves reminded of the uncertainties of life. MediaCorp Radio FM933 DJ Dennis Chew, long time friend of Chor Meng, was amongst the first to learn about the news. Dennis avoided mentioning the disease during the interview in hopes for people not to see Chor Meng as a "sick man". As he shares on how his "Ah Hea" (big brother) has looked out for him all these years, Dennis can't help but let tears well his eyes.
Since news of Chor Meng's illness broke out, Dennis has yet to meet up with him; they did however exchange SMS. It was the eve of Christmas when Dennis sent his blessing to his "Ah Hea"; instead Chor Meng's words of concern touched Dennis so much that tears filled his eyes. "I sent him a greeting: Ah hea, Merry Christmas! May you and your family be blessed and may all your wishes come true. I love you, as do everybody. God loves you too. Did you know how he responded? He said: Thank you for your well wishes. If you need anything, don't forget to call me. He is already in so much suffering but he is still telling to me not to hesitate to look for him if I need help. I think he is awesome! If I were in that situation, I don't know how I would have held out," shares Dennis.
He adds, "He was really happy to learn that I am doing the screenplay for "The Wedding of the Year". He told me I have done the Chews proud and that he will be more than willing to participate in my movie. But at that point of time, he was already in so much suffering"
The duo got to know each other while collaborating in drama series "The Future is Mine". They have since become close friends and would meet up often for chats. Dennis reveals, "In our line of work, gossips are common, but when it comes to Chor Meng, what is said between us, stays between us."
When Dennis was hospitalized from an accident last year during a cycling trip at Pulau Ubin, Chor Meng was first to visit him in the hospital. Similarly, after Chor Meng learned of his illness, Dennis was amongst the first to hear it from him. Dennis shares, "In the beginning, everyone including Chor Meng himself thought that he had suffered a stroke. After much checking, it finally confirmed to be Kennedy disease. He said to me in a very calm manner: Actually I've learned that this is the case, but don't let word leak out; I don't want others to know."
Chor Meng has recently completed filming for "Love Blossoms 2". There is currently no news of any new assignments for him; one can't help but feel concern over how his career would unfold from here on. In this aspect, Dennis comments, "I have yet to talk to him about this; but from my understanding, Chor Meng is a great actor and has the cut for hosting work. He has many ideas and a great business mind. I feel that even if he doesn't act anymore, he could still be a business consultant or a DJ."
Netizens have expressed their well wishes for Chor Meng. Facebook users have even organized fasting and prayer activities in his name. Dennis says, "He (Chor Meng) might have heard of Facebook, but would never imagined it to carry such influence. I feel that the support he is receiving will do a great deal of help for him. Chor Meng is not a coy; he doesn't need people to crowd him with: Oh, how are you? That's not his cup of tea; he is a man of perseverance."
