Credit: Reuters/Petr Josek BRATISLAVA (Reuters) - Slovaks went to the polls on Saturday to choose between economic liberals whose reforms led Slovakia into the European Union and ruling leftists who have taken a tough line to protect the average worker. World Three final pre-election opinion polls on Thursday and Friday indicated the ruling leftist SMER party of Prime Minister Robert Fico would win the vote but for the first time suggested it might not be able to form a majority coalition. Fico's party has been hit by allegations of a party funding scandal, and the surveys had a center-right-led opposition alliance winning between 78 and 89 of parliament's 150 seats. Major businesses and opposition parties accuse Fico, whose popularity is driven by a generous welfare agenda, of wasting public funds and polarizing politics with a confrontational style. Mainstream media, which Fico says is biased, have endorsed right-wing parties and call for a return to the reform path that made Slovakia the EU's fastest growing member in 2007. "We have a good chance to turn the rudder so Slovakia again becomes a tiger of Europe," Iveta Radicova, election head of the strongest center-right opposition SDKU party, said after voting. Officials reported turnout seemed higher than the 55 percent in the 2006 election. In the past, a higher number of voters has supported the center-right. Social networks such as Facebook have launched anti-Fico campaigns. Yet he remains by far the most popular politician in the euro area's poorest country for tough leadership that favors average Slovaks over big businesses. Polls close at 10 p.m. (2000 GMT) and first results are expected before midnight. EURO STRUGGLES SDKU hopes to form a coalition with the Christian Democrats (KDH), the liberal Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and two ethnic Hungarian parties. Analysts say such a grouping might be better placed to cut a budget deficit that hit 6.8 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) last year, fight corruption and improve strained relations with southern neighbor Hungary. Long chilly, those ties have deteriorated further since the far-right Slovak National Party joined Fico's government in 2006 and since right-winger Viktor Orban won an election in Hungary in April on a ticket that included a fight for the rights of Hungarian minorities abroad. Euro zone membership is also an issue after Slovaks rejoiced in 2009 when they adopted the euro ahead of regional peers. But since locking themselves into the single currency have struggled to stay competitive and, with living standards at just 72 percent of the EU average, have debated whether they should support richer debt-laden euro zone countries like Greece. The SDKU has indicated a center-right government might refuse to pay its 800-million-euro share of the EU bailout of Greece. After consistently leading the polls, SMER fell back this week after Slovak media published a tape recording suggesting it had received illegal funding in the 2002 election campaign. SMER has denied claims that it had not accounted for some of its funding in 2002 and accused rivals of illegal smear tactics. Opposition parties have denied the accusations. Former prime minister and SDKU chief Mikulas Dzurinda pulled out of the election in February over accusation of money laundering. Like Fico, he has denied breaking any law. Voters in the export-reliant economy, which contracted by 4.7 percent last year, have called for policies that will lead to job growth, while analysts say the next government must reform its pension system further and restructure the budget. "I voted for a change so I can stay and live in Slovakia," said Zuzana Bobovnicka, 23.
