ADVERTISEMENT In the United States online donations may have helped take President Barack Obama to the White House, but in Japan they have barely figured so far. An initial 73 politicians -- including incumbents and their challengers -- signed up for the "Love Japan" service which started this week, ahead of the August 30 lower house polls, said company spokesman Hirotoshi Kato. Among them were 24 members of the ruling conservative Liberal Democratic Party and 40 members of the main opposition group, the Democratic Party of Japan, which is enjoying a strong lead in opinion polls. Rakuten said it hoped the service "will help stimulate public participation in politics and secure the fairness and openness of political activities by offering services in a safe and easy way for individual donations." Under Japanese law, politicians can accept donations from individuals but not from companies, which can only donate to political parties, their local chapters or specially designated political fund groups. In past funding scandals, businesses have illegally donated to politicians, for example by inflating company employees' salaries and then asking the staff to pass the extra money on to politicians as individual donations. Japan's top government spokesman, Takeo Kawamura, welcomed the new service, saying it could bring a "breakthrough" for encouraging individual donations.
