Daihatsu Q1 profit falls 69.4 percent

 AFP - Monday, August 3
TOKYO (AFP) - - Japanese automaker Daihatsu Motor Co. said Monday that its net profit fell by more than two-thirds in the fiscal first quarter, but raised its outlook on strong sales and cost cuts.

Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corp., said net earnings slumped 69.4 percent in the April-June period from a year earlier to 3.55 billion yen (37 million dollars) as demand declined in Asia, Japan and Europe.
Operating profit fell 73.0 percent to 4.99 billion yen as revenue slid 20.2 percent to 355.70 billion yen, a statement said.
The automaker, which specialises in small cars, upgraded its forecast for the six months to September, the first half of the fiscal year, to 4.0 billion yen, up from an earlier forecast of 1.0 billion yen.
"Due to robust first-quarter sales in Japan and overseas, as well as the effects of streamlining our sales costs and daily expenses, sales and earnings are expected to exceed our previous forecast," the company said.
It left unchanged its forecast for a 64 percent drop in net profit to 8.0 billion yen for the full financial year to March 2010.
Daihatsu is one of the few Japanese carmakers to remain profitable during the recent industry turmoil because sales of the smaller cars in which it specialises have been less severely hit by the global economic downturn.
Toyota is expected to announce a big first-quarter loss when it reports its results on Tuesday.
