ADVERTISEMENT The pandemic flu strain is hurting tourism in some areas, with New Zealand reporting a sharp drop in visitors. The Philippines death, officially from heart failure, marks the second in the Asia-Pacific region linked to swine flu, after a man in Australia died Friday. Philippine Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said the woman's chronic heart disease was aggravated by pneumonia. She started to have flu-like symptoms such as dry cough, fever, chills and difficulty breathing two days before her death on Friday. A throat swab revealed she was also infected with the swine flu virus. Duque said health authorities cannot conclude that the death is due to H1N1. Yolanda Oliveros, a health department director for disease control, told reporters the woman, also had a liver disease. The Philippines also reported 17 more swine flu cases Monday, bringing the country's total to 445, though 84 percent have already recovered. Australian authorities on Sunday said a 26-year-old man who died in the southern city of Adelaide was a "suspected" swine flu death. Although the man had tested positive for the virus, authorities doubt it killed him because he also had pre-existing chronic diseases. In southern China, authorities closed an elementary school after 30 students there fell ill from swine flu, Chinese state media reported. The students from Shipai Township Central Primary School in Dongguan city in Guangdong province were all reported in stable condition since their illness was mild, the official Xinhua News Agency reported late Sunday. Authorities decided to close the school, which has 1,314 students, for a week after the cases were reported. China's state broadcaster reported Sunday that 58 more people were confirmed with swine flu, bringing the total on the mainland to 414. Malaysia also closed a second primary school and confirmed eight new swine flu cases, bringing the total number to 58, the country's health ministry says. Of the total cases, 42 people remain hospitalized but all are in stable condition. Fears of swine flu appear to be curbing international travel. New Zealand Prime Minister John Key told reporters there had been a significant fall in tourist arrivals from Asia in May. "There's no getting away from the fact that swine flu risks damaging our tourism industry in the short term," he said. "It's down about 50 percent _ it's a big reduction," he said. In the year to May 31, visitors from Japan slumped 19 percent to 93,000 and visitors from China fell more than 12 percent to 110,000. New Zealand now has 303 cases, with more than 250 cases reported in the last week. South Korea's health ministry confirmed 10 more cases, bringing the country's total to 115, and a health official confirmed 10 more cases in Vietnam, bringing the total to 48. The World Health Organization has declared a flu pandemic. As of Friday, it said more than 44,200 cases had been reported worldwide with 180 deaths, mostly in Mexico and the United States.
