US-TECH Summary

Early Palm Pre sales solid but new rivals due soon
ADVERTISEMENT
NEW YORK - Sales of Palm Inc's <PALM.O> closely watched Pre mobile phone are running on track with -- and exceeding some -- Wall Street expectations after just over one week in stores. But analysts said it may be too soon to tell if the initial excitement will be dampened by new smartphones debuting from Palm's much bigger rivals: Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone 3GS starts selling on Friday and Research in Motion's <RIM.TO> BlackBerry Tour is expected in coming months.
Mousavi supporters rally support on Twitter
LONDON - Supporters of defeated Iranian presidential candidate Mirhossein Mousavi posted defiant messages on Twitter on Tuesday, calling for a second banned pro-Mousavi rally to go ahead and offering security updates. Social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook have become a focal point for young, urban Iranians opposed to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who defeated Mousavi in Friday's presidential election and whose government controls the state media.
MySpace to lay off 30 percent of staff
NEW YORK - MySpace, the social network owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp <NWSA.O>, said it will cut 30 percent of its staff to lower costs as it struggles to stay popular in the face of rising competition. MySpace will be left with about 1,000 employees, it said in a statement released on Tuesday. The company declined to say how many people work at the service, but the percentage suggests that about 400 people will lose their jobs.
Twitter goes literary with Ulysses performance
NEW YORK - Twitter, the social networking site favored by some celebrities, has gone high-brow with a performance from James Joyce's 1922 novel "Ulysses." Two "Ulysses" enthusiasts, videogame designer Ian Bogost from the Georgia Institute of Technology and colleague Ian McCarthy, wanted to try to use the site in a culturally interesting way rather than just as a service that let users send 140-character messages, known as tweets.
RIM aims to cross categories with BlackBerry Tour
TORONTO - Research In Motion <RIM.TO> <RIMM.O> is adding another smartphone to its BlackBerry lineup as it aims to win market share among both executives and mainstream consumers despite tough economic conditions. The new model is known as the BlackBerry Tour and falls somewhere between the BlackBerry Curve, which has proved very popular with consumers, and the BlackBerry Bold, which RIM has aimed at high-end corporate users.
Obama backs repeal of tax on personal cell phones
WASHINGTON - The Obama administration on Tuesday said it will back repealing a hard-to-enforce tax on personal use of work cell phones, appeasing the business community, phone makers and users. A 1989 law requires companies seeking to deduct worker cellphones as an expense to track personal use with painstaking documentation of minutes. The government, in a notice last week sought public comment on making compliance easier, but now says the law should be scrapped altogether.
Opera launches new media, file sharing service
HELSINKI - Norway's Opera Software <OPERA.OL> opened a new, free service on Tuesday that enables simple sharing of personal computers' pictures, files or music with anyone on the Internet. The new service, which the company has said would "reinvent the Web" is part of Opera's Web browser, enables direct downloading from personal computer to personal computer and removes any need for data storage at servers in the middle. Files can be viewed with any browser.
Microsoft files lawsuit over "click fraud"
- Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> filed a lawsuit against three individuals believed to be based in Vancouver, accusing them of a form of "click fraud" by improperly using Microsoft's online advertising service for profit, court documents show. In the suit filed on Monday in a U.S. federal court in Seattle against the three individuals and companies they are believed to control, Microsoft said it suffered at least $750,000 as a result of the click fraud scheme.
U.S. State Department speaks to Twitter over Iran
WASHINGTON - The U.S. State Department said on Tuesday it had contacted the social networking service Twitter to urge it to delay a planned upgrade that would have cut daytime service to Iranians who are disputing their election. Confirmation that the U.S. government had contacted Twitter came as the Obama administration sought to avoid suggestions it was meddling in Iran's internal affairs as the Islamic Republic battled to control deadly street protests over the election result.
Adobe profit margin narrows, stock falls
BOSTON - Adobe Systems Inc <ADBE.O>, the maker of Photoshop and Acrobat software, posted the narrowest profit margin in more than 3 years, disappointing investors even though its revenue fell less than analysts had feared. The company's profit margin, excluding special items, dropped to 33.7 percent from 39.4 percent a year earlier.
