Apple takes wraps off new lineup of iPods

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc unveiled a snazzier line of its iPod on Wednesday, with new designs for every model of the popular media device in hopes of kick-starting holiday sales. "We've gone wild," Apple co-founder Steve Jobs said. "It's the biggest change in the iPod lineup ever."

India to target Google and Skype for data access

NEW DELHI/TORONTO - India added Google and Skype to its electronic security crackdown on Wednesday and began accessing some of the traffic carried on its initial target, Research In Motion's BlackBerry. In the latest salvo of a campaign driven by fear that unmonitored email puts Indian security at risk, Home Secretary G.K. Pillai said notices were being sent to Google <GOOG.O> and Skype asking them to set up servers in India and allow officials access to web data that militants could misuse.

Media stocks beat market ahead of Apple launch

NEW YORK - Media stocks gained more than the market in early trading on Wednesday ahead of details of a new online TV product announcement expected from Apple Inc <AAPL.O> later in the day. Stocks of content owners like Comcast Corp <CMCSA.O>, CBS Corp <CBS.N>, Cablevision Systems Corp <CVC.N>, New York Times Co <NYT.N> and News Corp <NWSA.O> were up between 4 and 6 percent.

Amazon eyes subscription Web TV service

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES - Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> has approached media companies with a proposal for a subscription service that gives users unlimited access to some television shows and movies over the Internet in a bid to rival Netflix Inc <NFLX.O>, two people familiar with the talks said on Tuesday. The Seattle-based online retailer has approached media companies including Time Warner Inc <TWX.N>, CBS Corp <CBS.N><CBSa.N> and Viacom Inc <VIAb.N><VIA.N>, these people say.

Target stores to sell Facebook gift cards

NEW YORK - Social networking website Facebook is dipping into the brick-and-mortar world by selling gift cards at retailer Target <TGT.N> that can be used toward purchasing virtual products for games hosted on the site. Facebook Credits will be available in Target stores beginning September 5 in increments of $15, $25 and $50.

Microsoft seeks China internet search partner: report

- Software giant Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is looking for a partner in China to help the company play a major role in China's internet search market, Wall Street Journal said. Simon Leung, Microsoft's Chief Executive for greater China, told the Journal in an interview that the company plans to invest about $100 million in Chinese companies.

Sony offers new generation of lighter e-readers

SAN FRANCISCO - Sony Corp <6758.T>, hoping to spur sales ahead of the holiday shopping season, has slimmed down its electronic readers and also given them touchscreen control. The three new versions of its "Reader" line also feature an improved screen with better clarity, the manufacturer said on Wednesday.

Facebook CEO: Keep private life out of lawsuit

NEW YORK - Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg says a lawsuit by a man who claims to own a huge chunk of the popular social networking website is seeking to uncover unnecessary details about his private life to harass him. Zuckerberg is fighting a civil lawsuit filed by Paul Ceglia, an upstate New York resident who claims an 84 percent stake in the privately held company, believed to be worth several billion dollars.

Staples to sell Kindle, Borders cuts reader prices

NEW YORK - The battle for the digital books market intensified on Tuesday, as office supplies retailer Staples Inc <SPLS.O> said it would start selling Amazon.com Inc's <AMZN.O> Kindle, and bookseller Borders Group Inc <BGP.N> said it was cutting its prices on some e-readers. Amazon.com's deal with Staples comes at a time that the online retailer is trying to fend off Barnes & Noble Inc's <BKS.N> Nook e-reader and Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad tablet for a slice of the growing digital books market by making its Kindle available in more stores.

Sony to challenge Apple with video service: report

TOKYO - Sony Corp will launch a new music and video download service linking a range of its devices, in a challenge to Apple Inc's dominant position in the market, the Financial Times said on Wednesday. The announcement is set to be made at the IFA technology show in Berlin on Wednesday, the paper said, coinciding with a scheduled media event by Apple the same day in the United States.
