JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesia's president invoked special powers Wednesday to replace three top commissioners in the anti-corruption agency who were ousted after being named suspects in police investigations.

The high-profile Corruption Eradication Commission, which has made powerful enemies by taking on the nation's deeply rooted graft, has come under attack by members of parliament and the police force, supporters say.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono issued a decree establishing a panel of experts to name candidates for the three posts, in a move that was criticized as unwarranted political interference in an independent institution.

Commission supporters had called for months for action by the president, whose popularity is largely based on his anti-corruption campaign, to halt efforts by opponents to undercut its authority.

Yudhoyono signed the decree just before departing for the United States to attend the G-20 meetings in Pittsburgh, Justice Minister Widodo Adisucipto told reporters. The team of experts has one week to recommend successors, he said.

"This decree was issued because the president wants to make sure the (commission) continues to fight corruption effectively," Widodo said. "He believes that the void in ... leadership would affect the anti-graft body's performance."

Indonesia is regularly ranked as one of the most corrupt countries by Transparency International, a graft watchdog. The commission has led scores of high-profile cases against lawmakers, entrepreneurs and law enforcement officials since it was established with extraordinary prosecutorial powers in 2004.

In May, Indonesian police declared corruption agency chief Antasari Azhar a murder suspect. Earlier this month, his two top deputies were accused of abusing their power by issuing travel bans against suspects. None of the cases has yet gone to trial.
