FCC officials say they want to maintain "net neutrality," which is the right of consumers to surf the Internet without interference. In other words, net neutrality ensures that all data is treated the same in terms of the speed it travels. Concerns over net neutrality sprang up after an Internet service provider chose to treat some data differently in terms of the speed it traveled. The concern is that rival companies will want to restrict access to other companies' web sites. Weighing in in support of government regulations to ensure that are Internet giants Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Both of those companies are dependent on the Internet. However, many telephone and cable companies say their networks are already open and they are opposed to more government regulation over concerns that it will raise their costs. Whether broadband infrastructure will be remain lightly regulated or be more stringently regulated is up for grabs at this point with a comment period now open on three different plans proposed by FCC officials. One plan, called the third-way, would balance between a hands-off approach and heavy regulation.
