New York, NY, United States (NewsBahn) - An apparent mechanical failure aboard a Staten island Ferry injured more than three dozen people, one seriously, when the vessel was unable to stop and slammed full speed into a dock Saturday morning.
The ferry, the Andrew J. Barberi, was nearing the end of a run from Staten Island to Manhattan about 9:25 a.m. when the captain realized he was unable to pull back on the throttle and slow the boat in preparation for docking. He sounded an alarm and the 18-member crew managed to move passengers away from the bow of the ship before the collision.
Some 252 people were aboard the vessel, which was moving about 6 miles an hour at the time of the collision. Fire department officials said 36 people were taken to hospitals.
Initial reports said none of their injuries were considered life-threatening, but later reports said one person was seriously injured. The nature of the injuries was not reported.
The ship struck wooden pilings on each side of the slip, then a bridge, which absorbed the blow and slowed the vessel. The impact left two 4-foot gashes in the hull about 17 feet above the water line.
The accident added to the tragic history of the Andrew J. Barberi . The vessel was involved in a crash in October 2003 in which 11 people were killed and 70 injured after the pilot fell asleep at the wheel, missed the dock and plowed into a maintenance pier.
Ferry service was restored about three hours after the Saturday accident.
