Rihanna, Kanye and Jay-Z to open new Jay Leno show
ADVERTISEMENT
LOS ANGELES - R&B stars Rihanna, Kanye West and Jay-Z will perform on the premiere of Jay Leno's comedy and chat show in September, in a apparent bid to grab hip, young viewers to NBC's new primetime experiment. NBC said on Thursday that the trio would perform "Run This Town" from Jay-Z's new album, "The Blueprint 3," when "The Jay Leno Show" makes its debut on September 14 at 10pm.
"Brat Pack" director John Hughes dies of heart attack
LOS ANGELES - Filmmaker John Hughes, who made some of the most memorable teen comedies of the 1980s and turned Macaulay Culkin into a major star, died suddenly of a heart attack in New York on Thursday. He was 59. Hughes, who had largely turned his back on Hollywood in the past decade to become a farmer in the Midwestern state of Illinois, collapsed while strolling in Manhattan, where he was visiting family.
Posh Spice, Katy Perry to fill in on 'Idol'
LOS ANGELES - Pop singers Katy Perry, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, and other female artists will be guest judges on "American Idol" this upcoming season to help replace departing Paula Abdul, Fox television executives said on Thursday. But Fox and the producers of the most-watched American television show said they are searching for a permanent, fourth judge to sit in Abdul's seat when the ninth season of the show returns to TV in early 2010.
Hark! Bob Dylan Christmas album coming
NEW YORK - Bob Dylan is set to release an album of Christmas songs this holiday season, according to the Web site BullyPulpit.com. It said at least four songs have already been recorded for the album including, "Must Be Santa," "Here Comes Santa Claus," "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and "O Little Town of Bethlehem." The sessions have taken place at Jackson Browne's studio in Santa Monica, Calif., it added.
MTV dancing with Robert Hoffman
LOS ANGELES - MTV has handed a series order to an untitled variety/comedy project starring actor and dancer Robert Hoffman. Inspired by Hoffman's Web site punchrobert.com, the show is a combination of hidden camera, comedy and dance. It is targeted to debut in the first quarter.
Barbra Streisand playing club show in New York
NEW YORK - Barbra Streisand, who rarely performs concerts, will return to the tiny New York jazz club where she opened for Miles Davis 48 years ago. She will play a free, one-off show at the 123-capacity Village Vanguard on September 26, three days before the release of her new album "Love Is the Answer," a collection of jazz standards.
TV dealmaking season wraps up; prices, volume down
NEW YORK - Advertisers bought about 15 percent less commercial time from networks ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox for the upcoming TV season and -- for the first time in years -- paid less for the airtime they did purchase. Advertising and broadcast television executives said nearly all of the dealmaking for the 2009-2010 TV season had wrapped up by late Thursday, following months of what they described as protracted and frustrating negotiations.
Final season of "Monk"may solve some mysteries
LOS ANGELES - In 2002, USA Network was on a sci-fi track with the successful launch of its first original series, "The Dead Zone," when "Monk" came along. The dramedy starring Tony Shalhoub as an obsessive-compulsive detective ushered USA's new identity as a destination for lighter takes on popular franchises centered on quirky characters and became the first building block in the network's current slate of series that has propelled it to the top of the cable ratings.
Warhol's portrait of Michael Jackson goes on show pre-sale
LONDON - A portrait of the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, by the King of Pop Art, Andy Warhol, went on show in London on Thursday for three days in the lead-up to an auction in New York of the 1984 painting. The portrait is on display at London's O2 Arena, the venue where Jackson was meant to hold his string of comeback concerts. He died on June 25 before the shows could happen.
Spirit Awards ditching afternoon ceremony on beach
NEW YORK - An annual Oscar weekend tradition has been broken, with the Spirit Awards shifting from their coveted Saturday afternoon slot the day before the biggest night in Hollywood. Film Independent, which runs the arthouse-oriented ceremony, said next year's show will take place on Friday, March 5, at 8 p.m., two days before the Academy Awards.
