Chase - AHN Editor New York, NY, United States (AHN) - A multi-million dollar settlement has been reached with workers who suffered health problems after rescue and cleanup efforts at the destroyed World Trade Center. A judged still must approve the $657.5 million deal with nearly 10,000 plaintiffs. The agreement inked on Thursday comes after six years of legal wrangling and, for many of the clients, a long excruciating wait. The original complaint was comprised of firefighters, police officers, construction workers and emergency workers who had filed lawsuits against 90 defendants, including the city of New York and private companies hired for the cleanup. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed seeking compensation for health problems workers contend are a result of dust at the site of the collapsed World Trade Center towers. The complaints allege the city's top officials and others failed to properly protect workers as well as provide health-care services to those who fell ill after the 9/11 attacks. Many of those who filed complaints said they developed illnesses, generally respiratory in nature, because of exposure to dust and materials at Ground Zero. The settlement comes from a $1-billion federal fund called the WTC Captive Insurance Co. It was originally created to assist victims of the terrorist attack and is controlled by New York's mayor Michael Bloomberg. In published reports, Bloomberg has called the financial settlement a "fair and reasonable resolution to a complex set of circumstances."
