'King's Speech,' 'Social Network' vie for Oscars gold
HOLLYWOOD (AFP) - – Frontrunner "The King's Speech" was narrowly trailing Facebook movie "The Social Network" by half-way through the Academy Awards show, as Hollywood's finest vied for the Oscars crown.
The British royal drama's writer David Seidler took the best original screenplay prize, while Aaron Sorkin won best adapted screen play for "The Social Network," which also won best original score.
But everything was to play for as the major categories -- including best actor, actress and best film -- were due to be announced in the show's final stages.
Boxing movie "The Fighter" already had two gongs -- best supporting actor for Christian Bale, and best supporting actress for Melissa Leo, who had both been frontrunners in their category.
In other early prizes, "Toy Story 3," the third instalment of the family-friendly franchise starring Woody, Buzz Lightyear and co. won best animated feature Oscar as expected.
And the best foreign film prize went to "In a Better World" by Denmark's star director Susanne Bier, who vanquished movies from Algeria, Canada, Greece and Mexico.
The Oscars is the culmination of the multi-billion movie industry's awards season and has been preceded by months or frantic campaigning for the coveted gold statuettes waiting to be handed out Sunday night.
Co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway started the show with a filmed skit in which they were transplanted into the main films nominated for best picture, with amusing results.
"The Social Network" hopes it could yet dethrone the British film, nominated in 12 categories including best picture and best actor, which is widely expected to go to Colin Firth.
Ballet thriller "Black Swan" is also among a clutch of films hoping for one of the prestigious golden statuettes, with Natalie Portman in the lead for the best actress Oscar.
Youthful hosts Hathaway and Franco -- who openly referred to the attempt to attract a "younger demographic" -- the show was expected to include music by Randy Newman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Britain's Florence Welch.
Despite anticipation building for "The King's Speech," no one was taking anything for granted as rivals like Western remake "True Grit," "The Fighter" and hi-tech thriller "Inception" vie for awards.
The 10-strong shortlist for best film also includes "127 Hours" -- about a hiker forced to amputate his own arm, lesbian parenting movie "The Kids Are All Right."
Firth was considered a shoo-in to be named best actor for his portrayal of Britain's King George VI, who overcame his crippling stammer with the help of eccentric Australian voice coach Lionel Logue, played by Geoffrey Rush.
He was up against Jeff Bridges -- who beat Firth to the best actor Oscar last year -- in "True Grit," Jesse Eisenberg in "The Social Network," James Franco in "127 Hours" and Spanish heart-throb Javier Bardem in "Biutiful."
Portman's rivals for best actress are veteran Annette Bening in "The Kids Are All Right," Australia's Nicole Kidman for "Rabbit Hole," Jennifer Lawrence in "Winter's Bone" and Michelle Williams in "Blue Valentine."
Some critics believe David Fincher could well be named best director for "The Social Network," which tells how Zuckerberg created the game-changing website Facebook from a controversial start while a Harvard student.
