Polanski fights extradition as Hollywood watches
ZURICH/PARIS - Roman Polanski's extradition to the United States on a decades-old sex charge could take years to accomplish after the Oscar-winning film director decided on Monday to fight his removal from Europe. Polanski, 76, who has dual French and Polish citizenship, was arrested on Saturday on a U.S. warrant by authorities in Switzerland, where the "Chinatown" director was set to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival.
Jackson reigns at box office, in advance of film
LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson's fans are ready to rock with him one last time, as next month's "This Is It" movie about the late pop star breaks records for advance ticket sales, the studio behind the film said on Monday. Based on rehearsal footage of Jackson taken in the weeks before the "Thriller" singer's death, the film does not open until October 28. But early sales began on Sunday, resulting in hundreds of sold-out shows in North America alone.
Guitar maker draws buyers, cult-like following
STEVENSVILLE, Md - Three decades after defying the odds and persuading Carlos Santana to try out his hand-built guitar, Paul Reed Smith's quest for perfect tone is still reeling in enthusiasts from all over the world. Despite the world economic downturn, his company has built a new multimillion dollar factory and is looking at multiplying revenues while other instrument makers report declining sales.
"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" inspiration dies
LONDON - The woman who inspired the iconic Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" has died, a charity said Monday. Lucy O'Donnell was a childhood friend of John Lennon's son Julian, and the song title was inspired by a picture that he had drawn of her at school.
Philip Seymour Hoffman disappoints in "Othello"
NEW YORK - William Shakespeare's "Othello" has worked perfectly well onstage for more than 400 years, so it's a puzzlement as to why director Peter Sellars felt such the need to mess with it in his new production starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. The answer, of course, is that the controversial theater/opera director always has imposed his own authorial ideas into his stagings, with results that have ranged from the sublime to, in this case, the ridiculous.
Wright, Burnett join forces for CBS drama
LOS ANGELES - "Dirty Sexy Money" creator Craig Wright has teamed with top reality producer Mark Burnett for a drama project that has received a script commitment from CBS. The untitled project, produced by Sony Pictures TV, centers on a lawyer who, after a near-fatal car crash, is offered a second chance at life by the ghost of his ex-wife.
Warner, YouTube near deal for music videos: sources
NEW YORK - Warner Music Group Corp and YouTube are finalizing an agreement that would allow music videos from artists such as Madonna and Green Day to once again be featured on the popular website, according to sources close to the deal. The deal, which one source described as imminent, would resolve a dispute over licensing rights that caused Warner Music to pull music videos by its artists from Google Inc's YouTube in December.
"Cloudy" again leads struggling box office
LOS ANGELES - The family cartoon "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" led the North American box office for a second weekend on Sunday while another slew of newcomers bombed amid crippling reviews and moviegoer apathy. "Cloudy," a 3D animated feature based on a popular children's book, earned $24.6 million during the three days beginning Friday. The 10-day haul for the Columbia Pictures release stands at $60 million.
Harrelson, Murray bring flair to "Zombieland"
LOS ANGELES - Falling closer in tone to "Shaun of the Dead" than "28 Days Later" or the George Romero movies, "Zombieland" has its tongue planted firmly in its rancid cheek while still delivering the visceral goodies. It's an admittedly tricky balance that's pulled off with energetic panache by first-time director Ruben Fleischer and the writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. It also has perfectly pitched performances, including the cameo of the year by Bill Murray. But more about that in a bit.
"Trauma" stands out among new fall TV shows
NEW YORK - NBC's primetime lineup is already laden with cop and hospital dramas, so it hardly seems necessary to add yet another to the schedule. And initially, the new medical series "Trauma" seems to be the same old tune, different verse. Five minutes in, however, makes it clear that "Trauma" is not the same old song. Instead, it's a riveting, multilayered show about fallout; survival amidst the ruins -- a standout among the fall season's offerings. The show premieres on Monday at 9 p.m. EDT/PDT.
