The 3-D sci-fi film "Avatar" followed with nine nominations, while "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air" received eight each. Leona Lewis attacker held under UK mental health laws LONDON - A schizophrenic man who admitted punching British pop star Leona Lewis as she signed copies of her autobiography in a London bookstore was ordered by a court on Monday to be detained indefinitely under mental health regulations. Peter Kowalczyk, 29, hit the singer, who won the British TV talent show "The X Factor" and whose single "Bleeding Love" was a worldwide hit, in October. Disney's "Princess" charms weekend moviegoers LOS ANGELES - Disney's animated "The Princess and the Frog" hopped over feel-good football film "The Blind Side," to take the top spot in North American box office sales in its first weekend in wide release. The family-friendly Disney movie drew $25 million in ticket sales. It tells the tale of a woman turned into a frog after a kiss and marks a return for the studio to hand-drawn animation. History miniseries takes on the Kennedys LOS ANGELES - The History cable network has cast its vote for "The Kennedys," developing an eight-hour miniseries about the iconic American clan. The project, slated to begin production in the spring for a 2011 premiere, hails from "24" co-creator/executive producer Joel Surnow, a noted Hollywood conservative. It marks the channel's first foray into scripted programing. Downey's "Sherlock Holmes" an action hero LOS ANGELES - It's a good time to be Robert Downey Jr. With a career resurgence that continues unabated after the one-two punch of 2008's "Iron Man" and "Tropic Thunder," the 44-year-old actor finds himself operating with new clout and a potential new franchise with "Sherlock Holmes," opening December 25 via Warner Bros. L.A. critics honor Iraq war movie "Hurt Locker" LOS ANGELES - "The Hurt Locker," an independent movie about a team of American bomb-disposal experts serving in Iraq, was named the year's best picture by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association on Sunday. The movie also won the directing prize for Kathryn Bigelow, who ended a seven-year break from feature filmmaking with the acclaimed saga. NBC launching "Chuck" game LOS ANGELES - NBC is launching a "Chuck" game that gives points to fans who talk about the show using social media. The game is called "Mission: Chuck Me Out" and is designed to track users who mention "Chuck" on Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. In fact, every tweet that mentions "Chuck" can earn the user a point. Haneke's "White Ribbon" sweeps European Film Awards BOCHUM, Germany - Austrian director Michael Haneke's "The White Ribbon," a chilling exploration of the roots of Nazi terror, dominated the European Film Awards on Saturday, winning three prizes including best film. In the black-and-white film, a sinister series of crimes rocks a village in northern Germany on the eve of World War One, and appears linked to a group of children brutalized and scarred by their parents. "Complicated" simplifies mature romance LOS ANGELES - "It's Complicated" is a middle-aged sex comedy but with more rom-com urges than farcical ones. It's from writer-director Nancy Meyers, who has found a comfort zone in gentle, even warm comedies about older adults facing complications that re-direct their lives into pleasantly unexpected emotional channels. "Complicated" forges ahead with these themes. Because no one else in Hollywood seemingly makes movies for middle-aged moviegoers, especially women, Meyers inevitably scores box-office successes, and this one should forge ahead in that area, too. Universal releases the film Christmas Day. What Meyers doesn't do is take chances. She sticks to formula and predictability. In "Complicated," this is as much a matter of casting as writing. "Twilight" studio to distribute Polanski film LOS ANGELES - The Hollywood studio behind the "Twilight" teen franchise said on Friday it has acquired North American rights to distribute jailed director Roman Polanski's latest film, "The Ghost Writer". Los Angeles-based Summit Entertainment plans to release the thriller in the first half of 2010.
