Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Weekend Edition Singapore Asia Pacific World Sarkozy pushes defense, nuke cooperation in India By AIJAZ RAHI,Associated Press - Saturday, December 4 Send IM Story Print BANGALORE, India – President Nicolas Sarkozy sought to drum up business for French companies in India as he began a four-day visit Saturday during which a deal is expected on building nuclear plants to feed the Asian giant's burgeoning energy needs. In a protest timed to coincide with Sarkozy's visit, hundreds of farmers demonstrated in western India against two proposed nuclear power plants expected to be built with help from a French company, the Press Trust of India news agency said. Police arrested scores of protesters, who said they would refuse to give up their land. In India, farmers strongly oppose their land being converted to industrial use. On his first stop, Sarkozy visited the state-run Indian Space Research Organization in the technology hub of Bangalore, where a joint project with France is developing a satellite to monitor climate change and ocean conditions. He extended support in a speech for India's bid for permanent membership in the U.N. Security Council _ echoing a call made by President Barack Obama during a visit to India last month. Sarkozy also urged similar representation for Brazil, Germany, Japan and some African and Arab nations. Sarkozy's trip comes amid a rash of visits by world leaders to India. The leaders of Russia and China are also due in New Delhi by year's end. Sarkozy is accompanied by first lady Carla Bruni, his defense, foreign and finance ministers and nearly 60 business leaders. Although no defense agreements are expected during the visit, he is likely to push for French companies to win contracts to supply military hardware. French companies are negotiating to upgrade 51 Mirage-2000 jet fighters in the Indian air force. India is also in the market to buy 126 fighter jets, a deal worth $11 billion, and about 200 helicopters worth another $4 billion. According to defense experts, India is expected to spend $80 billion between 2012 and 2022 to upgrade its military. France is also hoping to benefit from India's decision to build about 20 nuclear power plants. France has steadily supported India's nuclear program and resisted sanctions imposed by many nations when New Delhi tested a nuclear weapon in 1998. French nuclear power company Areva SA is the front-runner to help build two nuclear power plants near Jaitapur in western India's Maharashtra state. Last week, the site for the plants received environmental clearance. An agreement between Areva and India's Nuclear Power Corp. is likely to be signed during Sarkozy's visit, said T.P. Seetharam, a top official in India's Ministry of External Affairs. Sarkozy's office in Paris said his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday will also focus on France's plans for reforming the Group of 20 leading economies. France takes over the rotating presidency of the G-20 this month and is seeking support from India for proposals to limit excessive currency volatility, control swings in commodity prices and reform global fiscal governance. Two-way trade between India and France declined in 2009 because of global economic woes but is on the upswing this year, said Vishnu Prakash, spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs.
