"The Social Network" opens in NY to buzz, controversy
NEW YORK - Billed as an exhilarating, visceral tale about the founding of Facebook, "The Social Network" gave the opening of the New York Film Festival on Friday an aura of anticipation and a touch of controversy. The film has attracted widespread attention with its assertion that it tells the true story of the birth of the website -- which now boasts more than 500 million members and is worth tens of billions. Yet, it is based on a book criticized for its reporting methods.
Cyber attack appears to target Iran: tech firms
LONDON - A computer virus that attacks a widely used industrial system appears aimed mostly at Iran and its sophistication suggests a state may have been involved in creating it, Western cyber security companies said on Friday. Kevin Hogan, Senior Director of Security Response at Symantec <SYMC.O>, told Reuters 60 percent of the computers worldwide infected by the so-called Stuxnet worm were in Iran, indicating industrial plants in that country were the target.
Ottawa says hopeful on RIM deal with India
OTTAWA - Canada's trade minister said on Friday he believes Research In Motion <RIM.TO> will be able to reach an agreement with India that gives police and security agencies access to encrypted BlackBerry communications. Peter Van Loan said after meeting with India's minister of commerce and industry, Anand Sharma, that the two discussed the matter and how it might be resolved.
Oracle's Ellison says microchip firms could be good fit
SAN FRANCISCO - Software giant Oracle Corp <ORCL.O> is keen to make more acquisitions to bolster its technology and a microchip company could be a good fit, CEO Larry Ellison said on Thursday. With global mergers and acquisitions in the rise, particularly in a hot U.S. tech sector, investors are speculating on the next big target.
India, RIM working on glitches in email access: source
NEW DELHI - India and Research in Motion <RIM.TO> have hit technical glitches in their talks on access to corporate email, but access to the messenger services is satisfactory, a government source said on Friday. "Messenger service is working fine, so far. We are getting manual reports, we are satisfied," the source said.
LinkedIn buys company, has talked to bankers: CEO
SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK - LinkedIn acquired ChoiceVendor, a small provider of online business ratings and reviews, on Thursday, and has had talks with bankers about various other "opportunities," the CEO of the fast-growing professional Internet social network said. Asked if the acquisition -- its second in 2 months -- was for under $5 million, Chief Executive Jeff Weiner said the figure was "in the right range."
Top tech firms settle employment probe
WASHINGTON - Google, Apple, Adobe Systems, Intel, Intuit and Disney's <DIS.N> Pixar reached a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department that bars the companies from agreeing to not poach each other's top employees, the department said on Friday. The firms had reached a series of agreements with each other -- Apple <AAPL.O> had deals with Google <GOOG.O>, Adobe <ADBE.O> and Pixar while Google had separate deals with Intel <INTC.O> and Intuit <INTU.O> -- agreeing not to cold call each others' workers, the department said.
Talking to death: texts, phones kill 16,000: study
WASHINGTON - Drivers distracted by talking or texting on cell phones killed an estimated 16,000 people from 2001 to 2007, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday. The estimate, one of the first scientific attempts to quantify how many people have died in accidents caused specifically by mobile telephone distractions, also suggests a growing number of these drivers are under 30.
Netflix signs expanded license agreement with NBC
BANGALORE - Netflix Inc <NFLX.O> said it signed an expanded license agreement with NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution that will allow its subscribers to watch content from some of NBC Universal's popular cable channels. The multi-year deal, which kicks off next week, allows the streaming of prior season cable and broadcast TV series new to Netflix members.
FCC paves way for new mobile devices
WASHINGTON - U.S. regulators paved the way on Thursday for new, faster wireless devices by opening unused television airwaves for mobile broadband use. Device makers such as Dell Inc <DELL.O>, Nokia <NOK1V.HE> and Motorola Inc <MOT.N> stand to profit from the Federal Communications Commission's unanimous vote to allow unlicensed wireless devices to operate on this idle spectrum.
