The prestigious annual event is one of the world's richest meetings, putting it in the company of America's Triple Crown, the Dubai World Cup and Britain's Royal Ascot. The premier event features four races on a turf track -- the 2,400-metre Vase, the 1,200-metre Sprint, the 1,600-metre Hong Hong Mile and 2,000-metre Hong Kong Cup. A packed crowd of about 55,000 is expected at the Sha Tin Racecourse to watch top thoroughbreds including champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom and Melbourne Cup winner Americain. "It's one of the biggest race days of the year," William Nader, the Hong Kong Jockey Club's executive director of racing, told AFP. "The prize money puts it right at the top of the tree in international racing." Horse racing is the biggest spectator sport in the former British colony, where that and football are the only kind of legalised gambling allowed. Last year, Hong Kongers gambled about 9.68 billion US dollars at the track and Jockey Club betting centres scattered around the city of seven million people. The betting turnover at Sunday's races alone is expected to top 138 million US dollars, Nader said. Apart from Beadman and Lemaire, other big names include Olivier Peslier, Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori. A renowned acrobatic troupe from the Chinese city of Tianjin and Cantonese pop star Mag Lam will perform at the track in Hong Kong's high-rise suburbs. Last year, Peslier won the Hong Kong Cup riding Vision D'Etat, Olivier Doleuze took the Hong Kong Mile riding Good Ba Ba and Gerald Mosse grabbed top spot in the Hong Kong Vase on Daryakana.
