The cremation set in a trench in Jiegu town, the worst hit area, was allowed by local authorities to prevent the spread of disease. Officials at the Qinghai Provincial Civil Affairs Department also said they want to respect the custom of the ethnic minorities. Yushu residents are mostly Tibetans who turned to the monks for help instead of the authorities, who are mostly Han Chinese. Rescuers continue to search for 417 people who have been missing since the 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the mountainous region. The quake killed 1,144 people and injured 11,744 others. Relief operations also continue with food, medicine and tents being given to people who lost their homes and are exposed to freezing temperature.
