The former movie actor, now 63, left his office with an approval rating of only 22 percent and a $28 billion state budget deficit. The low approval rating is seen as a protest by California residents over the less priority given by the governor to the state’s coffers over environmental issues, which caused California’s budget deficit to triple during Schwarzenegger’s term. Hours before the governor left his office on Sunday, he commuted the sentence of the son of a California politician, which could be controversial even as Schwarzenegger becomes a private citizen. He reduced the sentence to 7 from 16 years of Esteban Nunez, the son of former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez. The younger Nunez and an accomplice pleaded guilty in May to voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon over the stabbing of a San Diego State University college student. The elder Nunez was a Democrat who helped the former governor push landmark laws that reduced greenhouse gases in California.
