JPG Magazine may get new lease on life
AFP - Thursday, January 15
WASHINGTON (AFP) - - JPG Magazine, a print and Web publication showcasing pictures by amateur and professional photographers, may be getting a new lease on life.
JPG announced earlier this month it was shutting down, but editor-in-chief Laura Brunow Miner said this week it had received interest from "multiple credible buyers" and that the website, jpgmag.com, was staying open.
"Your efforts, such as starting savejpg.com, writing blog posts, commenting on Twitter and Flickr, and generally making your voices heard, have provided exciting new opportunities for us," Miner told JPG's members in a post on the magazine's blog.
"We're thrilled to say that because of you, we have multiple credible buyers interested in giving JPG a home," she said. "We will be keeping the site up after all, and hope to have a final update in the next week or so on who the acquirer will be."
In a January 1 blog post, Miner wrote that jpgmag.com was being shuttered and publication of the print version of the magazine halted.
"We all deeply believe in everything JPG represents, but just weren't able to raise the money needed to keep JPG alive in these extraordinary economic times," she wrote. "As a result, jpgmag.com will shut down."
Nearly 200,000 photographers have contributed material to JPG since it was taken over more than two years ago by 8020 Publishing, now known as 8020 Media.
Contributors submitted photos on various themes and JPG users voted on the best to be displayed in the print magazine, published six times a year with a circulation of 50,000, according to The New York Times.
JPG owner 8020 Media, backed by Halsey Minor, who also founded the Internet news agency CNet, is one of a number of media start-ups experimenting with user-generated content on the Web.
On its website, 8020 Media describes itself as a "revolutionary new hybrid media company, bringing the best of magazines and the Web together."
