"The parade has great value and shows the unity and happiness among the people of Reykjavik," Gnarr, wearing a floral-print dress over an ample bosom and carrying a large handbag, told AFP. The 43-year-old father of five, one of Iceland's top comedians before he took over as mayor in June, rode at the head of the parade, which organisers said gathered as many as 90,000 people. When asked if he had had second thoughts about appearing in front of so many people dressed as a woman, Gnarr insisted: "No. It's a hilarious amount of fun," and said he wanted to "somehow try to top this" at next year's parade. Iceland became the first country with an openly gay head of government when Johanna Sigurdardottir became prime minister in February 2009. When the Icelandic parliament in June this year voted to legalise gay marriage, Sigurdardottir and her long-time partner Jonina Ledsdottir were among the first couples to tie the knot. The Reykjavik Gay Pride festival opened on Thursday and will end Sunday.
