Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States (AHN) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday sided with public school officials in Pennsylvania who prevented a woman from reading the Bible during her son's show-and-tell session.
The court dismissed the lawsuit of Donna Kay Busch, who wanted to read five verses from Psalms to her son's kindergarten class.
The reading was supposed to be part of an "All About Me" class assignment for the students to describe parts of their lives in pictures and words. Busch's son drew a picture of the church his family attended.
His Evangelical Christian mother asked to read from the Bible to help with her son's assignment, but the school principal from the Marple Newtown School District in suburban Philadelphia refused to allow it. He said a Bible reading would violate the First Amendment's required separation of church and state.
The principal said Busch could read to the class but it must be from a different book.
Busch lost her case in a federal trial court and before the Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.
"A reading from the Bible or other religious text is more than a message and unquestionably conveys a strong sense of spiritual and moral authority," wrote Third Circuit Chief Judge Anthony Sirica in a 2-to-1 decision. "In this case, the audience is involuntary and very young. Parents of public school kindergarten students may reasonably expect their children will not become captive audiences to an adult's reading of religious texts."
