KARACHI, Jan 14 - Following is a list of events in Pakistan as well as news stories and press reports which may influence financial markets.
(Reuters News welcomes your feedback and for any queries please contact Chris Allbritton in Islamabad editorial on +92-51 281 0017 or via email at chris.allbritton@thomsonreuters.com or on Reuters messaging chris.allbritton@thomsonreuters.com)
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN PAKISTAN, ALL TIMES LOCAL FOLLOWED BY GMT: (The inclusion of diary items does not necessarily mean that Reuters will cover the event)
* The State Bank of Pakistan is due to release foreign investment data for December on or soon after Friday.
MARKET SNAPSHOTS
* The rupee <PKR=> ended at 85.62/68 to the dollar on Thursday, almost unchanged from Wednesday's close of 85.63/68 and dealers expect the local unit to remain steady in the short term because of higher remittances from overseas Pakistanis. [PKR/]
* The Karachi Stock Exchange's benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> ended 1.45 percent, or 178.20 points, higher at 12,459.44, on turnover of 229.46 million shares. [.KA]
* Foreign investors bought shares worth a net $11.2 million on Thursday.
* U.S. stocks edged lower on Thursday, hurt by a slide in drugmaker Merck and as falling commodities prices hit shares of natural resource companies.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 23.54 points, or 0.20 percent, to 11,731.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> dropped 2.20 points, or 0.17 percent, to 1,283.76. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> dipped 2.04 points, or 0.07 percent, to 2,735.29. [.N]
* Oil slipped on Thursday as markets weighed disappointing U.S. jobless claims data and the prospect OPEC would raise output should prices break above $100 a barrel for an extended period.
U.S. February crude <CLc1> ended down 46 cents at $91.40, falling as Wall Street weakened on the jobs report, after hitting a session high of $92.37. [O/R]
* Bullion rebounded on Friday as the euro lost strength despite better-than-forecast debt auctions by Spain and Italy, while purchases from jewellers and investors, which sent premiums for gold bars to 2-year highs, offered additional support.
Spot gold <XAU=> rose $3.41 to $1,376.16 an ounce by 0312 GMT after trading in a choppy $23 range on Thursday. Bullion struck a lifetime high around $1,430 an ounce in December on fears the euro debt crisis would spread. [GOL/]
