U2 is world's top earning band: survey
NEW YORK - Irish rockers U2, who netted $130 million from their massive world tour and other deals, are the world's top-earning musicians, according to Forbes.com. The group made $10 million in ticket sales on each tour stop and, along with merchandising revenue, hit the top of the list ahead of Australian heavy metal group AC/DC, who earned $114 million from their worldwide tour.
George Clooney testifies in Milan fashion fraud case
MILAN - George Clooney testified Friday at a trial of three people accused of exploiting his name to promote a fashion brand in Milan. The 49-year-old actor glided through camera flashes to a packed courtroom to testify as a civil plaintiff in a case dating back to 2008.
Miranda Cosgrove talks movies, music and "iCarly"
LOS ANGELES - When animated movie "Despicable Me" debuted last weekend at the No. 1 spot atop box offices with roughly $56 million in ticket sales, it surprised many industry watchers, but perhaps it shouldn't have. The voice of one character, a Margo, is that of teen star Miranda Cosgrove, whose Nickelodeon TV series "iCarly" is currently the network's top-rated show for kids, and Cosgrove's following of fans is among the main reasons for its success.
Pink rushed to hospital as stunt fails
BERLIN - Pink said she was fine after being rushed to a hospital when the harness supposed to lift her into the air at a gig in Nuremberg instead sent her shooting off stage into a barrier. Known for acrobatic stunts, the 30-year old singer posted a message on Twitter saying she was "seriously sore" and apologizing to fans for breaking off the concert on Thursday.
TV personality Erin Andrews sues Marriott hotels
LOS ANGELES - Erin Andrews, an ESPN reporter and recent contestant on television show "Dancing With the Stars," on Thursday sued Marriott International Inc and several hotels affiliated with it. The lawsuit, filed in Chicago, stems from a series of incidents in which a man videotaped Andrews naked through hotel room peepholes and posted the footage on the Internet.
Lindsay Lohan reported in rehab ahead of jail term
LOS ANGELES - Lindsay Lohan was reported on Thursday to have moved into a sober living facility in Los Angeles, less than a week before she is due to start a 90-day jail term. Celebrity news site X17online.com posted photos of the actress entering the building late on Wednesday and of her mother Dina, sister Ali, and former girlfriend DJ Samantha Ronson turning up later, apparently to visit her.
Michigan pair convicted in John Stamos extortion plot
DETROIT - A Michigan couple were convicted on Thursday for trying to extort $680,000 from "Full House" and "ER" actor John Stamos. Allison Coss, 24, and Scott Sippola, 31, were convicted on three counts of extortion by a jury in U.S. District Court in Marquette, Michigan.
Primetime TV shows to get racier after court ruling
LOS ANGELES - During a particularly unbridled episode of Fox's "American Dad" in January, Stan, well, gave "full release" to a racehorse. That shenanigan was duly hit with a fine from the Federal Communications Commission. But five years ago, it wouldn't even have aired. Fade whatever is left of the family hour: It's about to get even racier out there.
Mel Gibson custody battle back in LA court
LOS ANGELES - Lawyers for Mel Gibson and his estranged girlfriend squared off in court on Thursday in a bitter custody dispute over their baby daughter after a week of damaging, ranting phone calls leaked to an online web site. The now infamous tapes, which appear to feature Gibson cursing and threatening former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, have been handed over to police investigating allegations of domestic abuse by the Oscar-winning movie star.
"Winter's Bone" star cast in "X-Men: First Class"
LOS ANGELES - Jennifer Lawrence, who's been getting rave reviews for her work in "Winter's Bone," has been cast in the "X-Men" movie as Mystique, a role played by Rebecca Romijn in the first trilogy. Fox has been furiously casting "X-Men: First Class," which focuses on Marvel's superpowered team X-Men in a younger incarnation. James McAvoy will play Professor Charles Xavier, and Michael Fassbender is portraying Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a. Magneto. Those roles were originated, respectively, by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
