Scott had declared himself the victor Tuesday night as the race went down to the wire and Sink told supporters the results were too close to call. The latest unofficial results from the state Division of Elections show Scott with 48.9 percent or 2,588,415 votes, and Sink trailing with 47.6 percent or 2,520,138. Scott's margin of victory is more than 1 percent of all votes, ruling out a recount. A machine recount is automatically required if a candidate wins by 0.5 percent or less, and a hand recount is undertaken if the margin is 0.25 percent or less. The race had been expected to be close, and polls had the two candidates rotating as front runners throughout. Sink faced controversy only a week ago, when an aide broke the rules during a CNN debate and sent her a text message during a break in the program. "My team has analyzed the situation statewide and has concluded that while this is one of the closest elections in Florida gubernatorial history, there is no path to victory for us," Sink said in her concession speech in Tampa. The Democrat said she had called Scott and told him, "He will need to work very hard to bring our state together." "For the future of our state, I hope Rick Scott remembers that there are two and a half million voters who did not vote for him and that his highest priority has to be to bring our state together to meet our challenges," added Sink, who won her first elective office in 2006. Scott is one of several political newcomers this election year who defeated party-backed rivals in primaries largely due to continuing discontent with Washington. A Tea Party-backed conservative, Scott was ousted as chief executive officer of Columbia/HCA, a company that pleaded guilty in 2001 to Medicare fraud and paid $1.7 billion in fines in the nation's largest fraud settlement. “Nothing in my life has honored me as much as the willingness of Florida voters to put their faith in my plan for Florida," Scott, who spent $73 million of his own wealth for his campaign, told supporters in Ft. Lauderdale on election night. Scott succeeds Gov. Charlie Crist, who left the Republican Party this year to run as an independent for the Senate.
