ADVERTISEMENT The fighting broke out in the Fadel district after police arrested a leader of the Sahwa, or Awakening, militia, an interior ministry official said. "Two passerby were killed in the Fadel neighbourhood during clashes between policemen and Sahwa members, and the army has surrounded the area," the official said. He added that six other people were wounded in the fighting. An AFP correspondent said that in the early evening Iraqi army special forces moved into the neighbourhood, backed by US soldiers in four armoured vehicles as American helicopters hovered overhead. Automatic weapons fire and exploding grenades could also be heard, in the worst fighting of its kind involving Iraqis in Baghdad in more than a year. A Baghdad military command spokesman, General Qassem Ata, told AFP that Sahwa leader Adel Mashhadani was arrested in the early afternoon for unspecified reasons. The mostly Sunni militias, allied to US coalition troops and Iraqi government forces, have played a key role in driving Al-Qaeda fighters from Baghdad and other areas of Iraq and reducing violence since the end of 2007. Mashhadani had helped Iraqi and US forces expel Al-Qaeda militants from Fadel and restore law and order in the Sunni Muslim neighbourhood that has become his stronghold since 2008. An Iraqi soldier told AFP that Mashhadani was arrested by Iraqi special forces at a checkpoint which he manned jointly with Iraqi troops. Fear of more fighting meanwhile gripped some residents. Shopkeeper Abu Mustafa fled the area on foot with his wife and three children. "We are leaving because there's been shooting all afternoon. My daughter is in tears and my son has a fever," he said as he carried a bag with few personal belongings. Another resident, Zafe Khomayes, said that his family "told me not to return home because there was shooting."
