Share October 10, 2010 11:10 a.m. EST Topics: assault, crime, crime, law and justice, United States Lawrence Mijares - AHN News Contributor New York, New York, United States (AHN) - While inside a Dave and Buster's, a popular restaurant and arcade chain in Nassau County, New York, Evan Sachs, 23, chose at random an 8 year old boy playing a video game, crept behind then stabbed him five times in the back with a 3.5 inch hunting knife. Sachs pleaded not guilty when arraigned Saturday at the First District Court, Hempstead, NY for attempted murder, assault and possession of a dangerous weapon. The boy suffered a collapsed lung and was rushed immediately to the Winthorp Hospital in Long Island where he is now in stable condition. Immediately after the attack, the boy staggered towards his mother who screamed for help. Meanwhile, Sachs with bloodied hands, went to the restroom but was seen by a witness who called on the boy's father. Within seconds, both men apprehended Sachs who offered no resistance and was arrested when police arrived. Elaborating on the incident, Lt. Kevin Smith of the Nassau Police Department said the attack was totally unprovoked and that both assailant and victim did not know each other. According to Smith, Sachs was alone at the time and, "for no other apparent reason besides to commit this type of act." Though the boy's parents were within 20 feet from their son when the attack occurred, Lt. Smith was quick to observe, "Who hasn't sent their 8-year-old a few feet away to play a game? It's just a tragedy that something like this could ever happen." Sachs who lived nearby Calhoun High School, shocked the community there who couldn't believe that one of their own could commit such a crime. According to Sal Salerno, Sach's former drama teacher, he was known as a good student and a crative member of the school's internet radio club. Sachs is held without bail and is scheduled to be back in court on Wednesday.
