Global movie box office nears $30 billion in 2009
LOS ANGELES - Global movie ticket sales hit $29.9 billion last year, up 7.6 percent, with the most growth in the Asia Pacific region, the leading U.S. movie industry representative said on Wednesday. The Motion Picture Association of America, which represents Hollywood's major studios on government and industry issues, also said the number of digital 3-D screens worldwide tripled in 2009 to 8,989, which accounts for about 6 percent of all screens.
Corey Haim dies of overdose in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES - Corey Haim, a Hollywood teen star of the 1980s who became as famous for his struggles with substance abuse as his acting, died in Los Angeles of an apparent prescription drug overdose. He was 38. Canadian-born Haim, who rose to fame alongside fellow teen star Corey Feldman, was pronounced dead at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center early on Wednesday, police said.
New Matt Damon movie may bring Iraq war into mainstream
NEW YORK - They conjured box office magic with their "Bourne" spy movies, but Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass risk their reputation as sure-fire hitmakers when the Iraq war thriller "Green Zone" debuts on Friday. The action movie, which reunites A-list actor Damon and Greengrass, an accomplished director, aims to be the first big movie about the ongoing Iraq war to break through to mainstream U.S. audiences.
Madonna to launch fashion lines
BANGALORE - It appears the Material Girl will be getting a lot more material. Pop star Madonna and Iconix Brand Group on Wednesday unveiled a joint venture to launch fashion brands globally, starting with a juniors collection to be sold at Macy's department stores this August.
Tribeca unveils film lineup, Spitzer in spotlight
NEW YORK - The Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday unveiled its first group of films for April's event, including one documentary about the prostitution scandal that brought down former New York governor Eliot Spitzer. The as yet untitled nonfiction film by director Alex Gibney, whose "Taxi to the Dark Side" won an Oscar for its exploration of U.S. tactics in dealing with terror suspects, will be shown as a work in progress.
Clint Eastwood eyes J. Edgar Hoover project
LOS ANGELES - Clint Eastwood is lining up his next directing project, a biopic of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, the nation's No. 1 crimefighter for almost 50 years. Hoover was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, having headed its predecessor agency since 1924, and turned it into an efficient crimefighting organization. He remained its director until his death in 1972, aged 77, but his sculpted persona was already coming apart at the seams; he employed the FBI to harass political activists and used illegal methods to make secret files on leaders. Many biographies also assert the man was a closeted homosexual and cross-dresser.
ABC places "Trust" in Mark Burnett game-show pilot
LOS ANGELES - Mark Burnett is back in the game-show business, two months after one of his projects was scuttled by Fox amid allegations that it might have been rigged. The man behind "Survivor" and "The Apprentice" has received a pilot order from ABC for "Trust Me, I'm a Game Show Host."
Ralph Fiennes filming "Coriolanus" in Serbia
BELGRADE - After two years struggling to win funding amid the global financial crisis, actor Ralph Fiennes said on Wednesday he would start filming his directorial debut of a Shakespeare tragedy next week in Serbia. Filming of "Coriolanus" will start in Belgrade on March 17 in the country's highest profile movie project in decades, and is expected to last two months, the British actor told Reuters in an interview.
Steve Martin watching birds in "Big Year" comedy
LOS ANGELES - Steve Martin's big year is getting even bigger. The recent Oscar co-host and Grammy winner is in negotiations to go bird-watching in "The Big Year" alongside Jack Black and Owen Wilson.
Bigelow's Oscars will change Hollywood, slowly
LOS ANGELES - "Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow wrapped her fingers around that little golden man called Oscar on Sunday and cracked one of Hollywood's glass ceilings, but truly shattering it may take more time. Studies show that the number of jobs for women behind the camera have declined in recent years and fewer roles for women are turning up in major studio movies. One might call it "The Hangover" realization of Sunday's big party.
