ADVERTISEMENT "I think that the Bolshoi's reconstruction will not end in 2011. Considering that the preliminary stage of strengthening the building's foundations was complete in 2007, reconstruction will be done in 2013," Nikita Shangin was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency. The extra two years would cost the project an estimated 1.5 billion dollars more than originally planned, Shangin warned. Officials from the federal cultural legacy service agreed that renovation may take much longer as restoration would be launched once the building is rebuilt. "Restoration works suggest a major scientific approach, and so placing them under a deadline is wrong. It was a mistake to give out fixed and unrealistic opening dates," Kirill Zaitsev said. Located near Red Square, the theatre closed in 2005 for a 700-million-dollar renovation project that was originally expected to be finished in 2008, but the end date was later pushed back to 2009 and then to 2011. The Bolshoi's main stage, built between 1821 and 1825, had long been in need of major repairs when it closed, with visible cracks on the facade and performers hampered by a lack of backstage space. The renovations are to create a vast underground space for dressing rooms, modernise the stage and repair the acoustics which were damaged during the construction of the Moscow metro in the 1930s.
