ShareThis June 28, 2010 7:04 a.m. EST Topics: education, physical fitness, medical research, health, United States David Goodhue - AHN News Reporter Orlando, FL, United States (AHN) - Childhood obesity rates and other risk factors for type 2 diabetes can be significantly reduced with healthier cafeteria choices, longer physical activity periods and in-school health education, according to a new study. University of California, Irvine researchers told colleagues at an American Diabetes Association conference in Orlando, Fla. this week that the findings show that diabetes risks can be reduced in schools with high-ethnic minority populations. The researchers chose 4,603 students in 42 middle schools nationwide. They were tracked from the beginning of the sixth grade through the end of grade eight. Half the schools participated in the UC, Irvine team’s “intervention” program of longer gym classes, healthier cafeteria food and more classroom education. At the beginning of the study, almost half the kids were overweight, 16 percent had elevated fasting blook glucose levels, and almost 7 percent had raised fasting insulin levels. All these are type 2 diabetes risks. The researchers said that obesity rates in both sets of schools declined. They said a reason for this could be that faculty at the comparison school implemented their own rules to help their students improve their health. The study also appears in the June 29 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
