Appleby birdied the last three holes to win the inaugural Greenbrier Classic by one stroke over American Jeff Overton, taking his first title since the 2006 Houston Open plus a 1.08 million-dollar top prize and a place in golf history. "Everything was switched on. I felt pretty comfortable out there," Appleby said. "I liked all the reads. I liked the way the ball rolled. This course is receptive. Guys were shooting really low. I was fortunate to do all mine in one round." Appleby made nine birdies and an eagle in a round of 11-under par, the first US PGA round of 59 shot on a par-70 layout, to finish 72 holes on 22-under 258 and claim his ninth US PGA crown. "I had been playing well for a while but nothing to indicate 'Draino, Draino (draining so many putts),'" Appleby said. "Nice to get on that horse. I'm going to ride it as long as I can." The only prior 59s in US PGA history were all by Americans - Al Geiberger in 1977, Chip Beck in 1991, David Duval in 1999 and Paul Goydos just three weeks ago at the John Deere Classic. Appleby, playing in a PGA event for the 11th week in a row, had not broken 65 since 2006 in a tour event, a span of some 358 rounds. His prior career-low round was a 62 at Las Vegas in 2003. "I was quite comfortable," Appleby said. "It's not a nerve-racking thing to be involved in. I had a lot of opportunities and I made them. It was great to do that to win the tournament." Appleby, 39, debated any notion that his feat at the six million-dollar event might not shine as brightly because it came on a course where par was not 71, as it was for Goydos' 59, or 72 as it was for the others. "I can see both sides of the fence," Appleby said. "It is a number. I shot that number. But who says par is supposed to be 72? There's a lot of great courses that aren't 72." Appleby broke the course record of 60 set by Sam Snead in 1950 and matched Saturday by another US player, J.B. Holmes. The triumph booked Appleby a spot Thursday at the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational. Appleby birdied the second, then began a run of four birdies at the fourth and added another at the ninth, his eighth consecutive 3 on a hole pushing him into title contention. The Aussie eagled the par-5 12th and added a birdie at the 16th to share the lead. A 10-foot birdie at the par-5 17th put Appleby on 10-under and when he curled in another 10-foot birdie at the par-3 18th hole, he joined the 59 club. "I knew what it was all about," Appleby said of his final putt. "I knew I had to make it for the tournament. I knew I had to make it to have a 59. I'm sitting there going 'How many opportunities are you going to get to do this?' "The cards had been laying out perfectly for me all day. Why wasn't I going to do one more? I just got a good look at it and just - bang - it felt good." Appleby, ranked 159th in the world, played Saturday with D.A. Points, who made a run at a 59 before settling for a 61. He also watched Steve Stricker make a run at 59 before settling for a 60 at the John Deere last month. "It was nice to be on the receiving end," Appleby said. "It felt good. You don't shoot 8- to 10-under or more shooting with a great amount of indecision." Overton began the day with a three-stroke lead but struggled, following a birdie at the fifth with a bogey at six. His back nine began with back-to-back birdies but Appleby's charge left him trailing by two with three holes to play. Overton birdied the 16th for the fourth day in a row but lipped out a four-foot birdie putt on the 17th when his ball struck an object near the cup. Still upset about his misfortune, Overton left himself a 52-foot birdie putt over a ridge on the 18th green to force a playoff. The ball rolled just wide right and Appleby had his victory. "I got beat by a 59," Overton said. "What can you say? I played great, hit a lot of great shots. You can't win golf tournaments when you putt it that bad." Overton, 27, missed out on his first PGA title in five US PGA seasons, settling for his third runner-up showing and fifth top-five finish of the year. Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge was third on 263 after a final-round 65.
