Sher Mohammad Qasab, dubbed "head of the Taliban beheading squad" by Pakistani media, was one of the most senior commanders on a 15-name most wanted list that offered a 10 million rupee (120,000 dollar) reward. "Sher Mohammad Qasab, who had multiple bullet wounds, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning," the military said in a statement. "A team of army doctors was treating him but he could not survive." The army had earlier said Qasab was injured and arrested in a military operation on Wednesday in which three of his sons were killed and another captured. Qasab's capture follows recent announcements by the government that it had arrested Swat Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan and Mahmood Khan, a northern commander. The military said Qasab was the Taliban commander in Charbagh, in the heart of the mountainous northwest district where Pakistan launched its most determined assault to date against Islamist militants in May. In Urdu, the official language in Pakistan, Qasab means butcher -- which was his profession before he joined the insurgents. A military spokesman in Swat on Wednesday accused Qasab of personally beheading members of the security forces and setting fire to a dozen girls' schools in different parts of the valley, where Westerners once went skiing. "He was running a slaughter centre at Charbagh where he himself used to slaughter opponents and security personnel," the spokesman said. Swat slipped out of government control after radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah rose up in July 2007, commanding thousands of followers -- who beheaded opponents, burnt schools and fought to enforce Islamic law. Pakistan has posted a reward of 50 million rupees (more than 600,000 dollars) for Fazlullah. Pakistan launched the military operation against the Taliban after militants marched out of Swat and advanced to within 100 kilometres (60 miles) of the capital Islamabad in April. Pakistan's military says it has now cleared the area of insurgents and the government has encouraged almost two million displaced civilians to return home. The UN says around 1.65 million have done so. But skirmishes continue, raising fears that the Taliban are regrouping in the mountains, a tactic militants adopted after offensives in the past. Pakistan says over 2,100 militants and more than 177 security personnel were killed in the offensive but the tolls are impossible to verify independently. Separately, the military said on Sunday in a statement that it continued search and clearance operations during the last 24 hours in Swat and Malakand and killed eight militants. It added that 22 militants also surrendered to security forces in different areas of Swat.
