Swathes of Libya have fallen to opposition control and others into lawlessness, residents and reporters said, as opponents of veteran leader Moamer Kadhafi vowed to march on the capital and topple him from power. In a 20-minute telephone call to state television, Kadhafi blamed Al-Qaeda for the insurrection as he addressed his divided nation for the second time this week in an attempt to galvanise support for his crumbling regime. He insisted the uprising against his 41-year rule was not a people's revolt as in neighbouring Egypt and Tunisia, but fuelled by Osama bin Laden's network. Related article: Kadhafi blames Al-Qaeda The European Union said it was seeking naval back-up to rescue up to 6,000 trapped Europeans as tens of thousands scrambled to escape what former colonial ruler Italy called a "bloodbath" in the oil-rich north African state. Italy, the nearest major European country, warned of a looming "catastrophic humanitarian crisis" as migrants flee North Africa. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said they faced a potential "invasion of 1.5 million people" that would bring Italy "to its knees," while Asian states boosted massive air, sea and land operations to evacuate their nationals. US President Barack Obama described the scorched earth response of the regime's remaining loyalists as "outrageous," leading an international outcry over a death toll now running into hundreds. Related article: Yemen's Saleh orders 'protection' of demonstrators Elsewhere in the turbulent region, demonstrators in Yemen and Bahrain defiantly faced down teetering governments and called for new mass protests after the main weekly Muslim prayers on Friday. In Yemen, thousands of demonstrators vowed to keep protesting after government loyalists shot dead two of them, as deep fissures appeared in President Ali Abdullah Saleh's regime. Saleh, a key ally in the US "war on terror", ordered his security forces to offer "full protection" to his opponents and supporters alike, state media said. An unemployed 27-year-old man who set himself on fire four days ago over "difficult" living conditions died in south Yemen's port city of Aden, his relatives and medics told AFP. In Bahrain, top US military officer Mike Mullen arrived as anti-regime protests gathered steam in the kingdom where Washington's Fifth Fleet is based. "Obviously Bahrain has been important to us for decades," he said. Protesters in Manama renamed Pearl Square, the heart of anti-regime demonstrations, "Martyrs' Roundabout" after seven protesters were killed in a brutal police crackdown a week ago. Related article: Bahrain protesters show no sign of retreat Leading Shiite clerics have called for more demonstrations on Friday in a day of mourning for the victims, urging protesters again to march en masse to Pearl Square. After a deadly police raid a week ago, security forces have been commanded not to use force against demonstrators. In Jordan, Libya's ambassador Amman Mohammad Hassan Barghathi has resigned from his post, the state-run Petra news agency reported. Libya uprising timeline The kingdom's powerful Islamist opposition was also gearing for a "day of anger" on Friday to demand reforms, in what they hope will be the largest protest since anti-government protests began in January. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, under fire for not cracking down firmly enough on corruption and for a lack of adequate public services, urged Iraqis to ignore calls for massive demonstrations in Baghdad on Friday. Related article: 30,000 Egyptians and Tunisians flee The protests, scheduled for several weeks, have been billed by some as Iraq's own "Day of Rage," referring to similar such demonstrations in Egypt that eventually led to the overthrow of strongman Hosni Mubarak. In his first televised response to Kadhafi's decision to unleash vengeance on demonstrators, Obama promised to deploy a "full range of options" to halt "outrageous" bloodshed. The US State Department also said the embattled Libyan government now considers foreign journalists who entered the country without authorisation "Al-Qaeda collaborators." The International Organisation for Migration said that more than 30,000 Egyptian and Tunisian migrant workers had fled Libya since Monday and that it was on standby to help tens of thousands more. The French foreign ministry said the Libyan crackdown could constitute crimes against humanity which might need to be brought before international judges. Oil prices hit their highest levels in more than two years amid the turmoil in Africa's fourth largest producer. The cost of a barrel of benchmark Brent North Sea crude for delivery in April reached $119.79 in London before falling back slightly. Italy's ENI, the biggest foreign energy major in Libya, has had to cut its production by more than 50 percent because of the violence, chief executive Paolo Scaroni said. Briton Helena Sheehan, who was among those on an emergency repatriation flight on Thursday said: "Libya is descending into hell... There's just thousands and thousands of people trying to get out."
