Cruz used takedowns to counteract Johnson's striking advantage and win every round on most scorecards. In the co-feature, Stefan Struve won Submission of the Night by choking out Pat Barry. Source: (AHN Sports) Reporter: Shawn Krest Location: Washington, DC, United States Published: October 2, 2011 11:21 am EDT Topics: Sports, Mixed Martial Arts Dominick Cruz defended his UFC Bantamweight title with a five-round decision over Demetrious Johnson in the main event of UFC Live on Versus 6, Saturday night in Washington D.C. Cruz won a lopsided decision, but the fight was much closer than the cards indicated, as each round was extremely close, with both fighters battling for position in stand up grappling for much of the bout. Cruz earned the first takedown of the night with a throw and landed in side control. Johnson quickly worked to his feet and backed Cruz up with kicks and punches in a pattern that would be repeated throughout the fight. Johnson missed the mark with a head kick, and Cruz was able to catch it and take Johnson down into side control again. In the second round, Johnson caught Cruz early with a counter punch, but Cruz responded by shooting in for a takedown. That pattern was also repeated throughout the fight, as Cruz was able to cut off any striking edge Johnson gained by taking the fight to ground. Cruz landed a solid knee to the head while fighting for position with a whizzer, and he was finally able to muscle Johnson to the mat in the final 30 seconds of the round. In the third, Johnson scored his first takedown of the night, winning a battle for position from the whizzer position. Cruz immediately got back to his feet and managed to slip behind Johnson. Cruz then scored a highlight film takedown with a belly to back suplex. He then moved into back control on the stunned Johnson and caught him in a rear-naked choke. Cruz appeared to be close to ending the fight, but Johnson was able to grab the champion’s arm and slip out of the submission hold, returning to his feet. In the fourth, Johnson again stunned Cruz, this time with a pair of looping left hands. Cruz again shot in and got a takedown while working against the cage. Cruz moved into the mount, but Johnson tied him up with a body lock, preventing any significant punishment. Cruz began the final round with another suplex takedown, landing in side control. Cruz added several more quick takedowns in the final round, moving into full mount again in the final minute. Two judges matched AHN’s unofficial scorecard, giving Cruz every round in a 50-45 decision. The third had Cruz by a slightly closer 49-46 score. “The way DJ fought me was way different than how anyone else has up to this point,” said Cruz. “He’s a great grappler and will be a force in this division. His speed seemed about equal with everyone else that I’ve fought, but he definitely uses his more effectively. But tonight I proved why I’m the best in the world in my weight class. I’m willing to take on anyone the UFC puts in front of me and continue to show why I am the best.” In the co-featured bout, Stefan Struve earned submission of the night with a second-round trianble choke of Pat Barry. The fight matched the UFC’s tallest and shortest heavyweights, as the one-foot height difference between the 5’11” Barry and the 6’11” Struve was the largest in UFC history. Barry tried to nullify Struve’s advantage with leg kicks in the first round. Midway through the round, Barry managed to throw a head kick, then laughed at the bizarre scene. At the end of the round, Barry threw a flying knee, again laughing at the absurdity of trying to reach Struve’s head. “We had really good back and forth with our striking and he was doing a good job managing the distance,” said Struve. “He kept me at bay with his kicks, because those were landing hard and will definitely leave bruises tomorrow.” In the second round, Barry landed a big uppercut, but Struve responded with a kick that set Barry up for a choke. After trying the standing guillotine for a short time, Struve rolled Barry to the mat. Barry quickly swept into top position, leaving him open for a Struve triangle choke. Barry tried to escape the hold by standing and lifting Struve for a power bomb slam. The move only allowed Struve to tighten the hold and take Barry’s arm as well. Barry had no choice but to tap out at 3:22 of the second round. “When he got his legs around me, I felt them get really tight very quickly,” said Barry. “The slam was a last-ditch effort to get him to let go. I should have done it much sooner, but I just wasn’t able to get to my feet quick enough.” “Once I locked it in, I wasn’t letting go,” said Struve. “When he slammed me, I was able to put my arm down to catch myself.” Republish Email Facebook Digg Twitter Share Copyright © 2011 AHN - All rights reserved.Content including text, photos, videos, audio, graphics and logos may not be used for commercial purposes, reproduced, published, broadcast, rewritten for broadcast or publication or redistributed directly or indirectly in any medium without permission and license from CNS. BY EXERCISING ANY RIGHTS TO THE WORK PROVIDED HERE, YOU ACCEPT AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS LICENSE. TO THE EXTENT THIS LICENSE MAY BE CONSIDERED TO BE A CONTRACT, THE LICENSOR GRANTS YOU THE RIGHTS CONTAINED HERE IN CONSIDERATION OF YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF SUCH TERMS AND CONDITIONS. 1. Definitions "Collective Work" means a work, such as a periodical issue, anthology or encyclopedia, in which the Work in its entirety in unmodified form, along with one or more other contributions, constituting separate and independent works in themselves, are assembled into a collective whole. A work that constitutes a Collective Work will not be considered a Derivative Work (as defined below) for the purposes of this License. "Derivative Work" means a work based upon the Work or upon the Work and other pre-existing works, such as a translation, musical arrangement, dramatization, fictionalization, motion picture version, sound recording, art reproduction, abridgment, condensation, or any other form in which the Work may be recast, transformed, or adapted, except that a work that constitutes a Collective Work will not be considered a Derivative Work for the purpose of this License. For the avoidance of doubt, where the Work is a musical composition or sound recording, the synchronization of the Work in timed-relation with a moving image ("synching") will be considered a Derivative Work for the purpose of this License. "Licensor" means the individual, individuals, entity or entities that offers the Work under the terms of this License. "Original Author" means the individual, individuals, entity or entities who created the Work. "Work" means the copyrightable work of authorship offered under the terms of this License. "You" means an individual or entity exercising rights under this License who has not previously violated the terms of this License with respect to the Work, or who has received express permission from the Licensor to exercise rights under this License despite a previous violation. 2. The above rights include the right to make such modifications as are technically necessary to exercise the rights in other media and formats, but otherwise you have no rights to make any alterations or  Derivative Works. All rights not expressly granted by Licensor are hereby reserved, including but not limited to the rights set forth in Sections 4(d) and 4(e). 4. Restrictions. The license granted in Section 3 above is expressly made subject to and limited by the following restrictions: You may publicly display the Work only under the terms of this License, and You must include a copy of, or the Uniform Resource Identifier for, this License with every copy of the Work You publicly display. You may not offer or impose any terms on the Work that restrict the terms of this License or the ability of a recipient of the Work to exercise the rights granted to that recipient under the terms of the License. You may not sublicense the Work. You must keep intact all notices that refer to this License and to the disclaimer of warranties. When You publicly display the Work, You may not impose any technological measures on the Work that restrict the ability of a recipient of the Work from You to exercise the rights granted to that recipient under the terms of the License. This Section 4(a) applies to the Work as incorporated in a Collective Work, but this does not require the Collective Work apart from the Work itself to be made subject to the terms of this License. If You create a Collective Work, upon notice from any Licensor You must, to the extent practicable, remove from the Collective Work any credit as required by Section 4(c), as demanded. You may not exercise any of the rights granted to You in Section 3 above in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation. The credit required by this Section 4(c) may be implemented in any reasonable manner; provided, however, that in the case of a Collective Work, at a minimum such credit will appear, if a credit for all contributing authors of the Collective Work appears, then as part of these credits and in a manner at least as prominent as the credits for the other contributing authors. For the avoidance of doubt, You may only use the credit required by this clause for the purpose of attribution in the manner set out above and, by exercising Your rights under this License, You may not implicitly or explicitly assert or imply any connection with, sponsorship or endorsement by the Original Author, Licensor and/or Attribution Parties, as appropriate, of You or Your use of the Work, without the separate, express prior written permission of the Original Author, Licensor and/or Attribution Parties. 5. Representations, Warranties and Disclaimer UNLESS OTHERWISE MUTUALLY AGREED TO BY THE PARTIES IN WRITING, LICENSOR OFFERS THE WORK AS-IS AND ONLY TO THE EXTENT OF ANY RIGHTS HELD IN THE LICENSED WORK BY THE LICENSOR. THE LICENSOR MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND CONCERNING THE WORK, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, WARRANTIES OF TITLE, MARKETABILITY, MERCHANTIBILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NONINFRINGEMENT, OR THE ABSENCE OF LATENT OR OTHER DEFECTS, ACCURACY, OR THE PRESENCE OF ABSENCE OF ERRORS, WHETHER OR NOT DISCOVERABLE. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, SO SUCH EXCLUSION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. 6. Limitation on Liability. EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL LICENSOR BE LIABLE TO YOU ON ANY LEGAL THEORY FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THIS LICENSE OR THE USE OF THE WORK, EVEN IF LICENSOR HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. 7. Termination This License and the rights granted hereunder will terminate automatically upon any breach by You of the terms of this License. Individuals or entities who have received Collective Works (as defined in Section 1 above) from You under this License, however, will not have their licenses terminated provided such individuals or entities remain in full compliance with those licenses. Sections 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 8 will survive any termination of this License. Subject to the above terms and conditions, the license granted here is perpetual (for the duration of the applicable copyright in the Work). Notwithstanding the above, Licensor reserves the right to release the Work under different license terms or to stop distributing the Work at any time; provided, however that any such election will not serve to withdraw this License (or any other license that has been, or is required to be, granted under the terms of this License), and this License will continue in full force and effect unless terminated as stated above. 8. Miscellaneous Each time You distribute or publicly digitally perform the Work (as defined in Section 1 above) or a Collective Work (as defined in Section 1 above), the Licensor offers to the recipient a license to the Work on the same terms and conditions as the license granted to You under this License. If any provision of this License is invalid or unenforceable under applicable law, it shall not affect the validity or enforceability of the remainder of the terms of this License, and without further action by the parties to this agreement, such provision shall be reformed to the minimum extent necessary to make such provision valid and enforceable. No term or provision of this License shall be deemed waived and no breach consented to unless such waiver or consent shall be in writing and signed by the party to be charged with such waiver or consent.
