The report, titled "Emergency Department Visits Involving Energy Drinks," by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) finds that non-alcohol drinks contributed to 13,144 emergency room visits in 2009, a near tenfold increase from 2005. The reason for the majority of visits was listed as "adverse reactions" to energy drinks, although 44 percent of the visits were the result of individuals combining energy drinks with drugs or alcohol. Overall, men aged 18-39 made up the majority of ER visits. Visits by men were also more likely than visits by women to involve energy drinks in combination with alcohol or drugs. SAMHSA said much of the blame lies in caffeine, a key ingredient in most energy drinks. Excessive caffeine intake can lead to a host of problems including hypertension, diabetes and anxiety disorders. The report stressed the need for the beverage industry, consumer groups, the healthcare community, teachers and parents to spread the word that quick-fix energy drinks are not a solution and carry great risks. The American Beverage Association maintains that caffeine is a safe ingredient and has been extensively tested and deemed safe by the Food and Drug Administration and more than 140 countries worldwide. Between 2002 and 2007, sales of energy drinks grew by 559 percent, a rate on par with the increase with emergency room visits, a spokesperson for the ABA quotes in defense of energy drinks.
