Sony in PS3 movie streaming deal with Netflix
SAN FRANCISCO - Sony <6758.T> said on Monday it is partnering with Netflix <NFLX.O> to provide access to the online movie rental company's library through Sony's PlayStation 3 video game console. PS3 users in the United States who are also Netflix subscribers will be able to instantly stream movies from the Netflix catalog at no extra cost.
Twitter entries satirize works of literature
CHICAGO/LONDON, Oct 23 - Deciphering William Shakespeare plays in school essays apparently was not enough for two university students who have written a book of Twitter entries that summarize and satirize works of literature. "Twitterature: The World's Greatest Books Retold Through Twitter," which Penguin releases next month in the United Kingdom, is an irreverent, profane and sometimes brilliant collection of 20 comments on the ideas and themes in 60-some classics.
Nokia could seek up to $1 billion for iPhones: analysts
HELSINKI - Apple <AAPL.O> faces the possibility of having to pay Nokia <NOK1V.HE> up to $1 billion for the technologies used in iPhones sold so far if it loses a lawsuit brought by Nokia, analysts said. The world's top cellphone maker Nokia filed the suit in the United States on Thursday, saying Apple had infringed 10 patents in technologies like wireless data transfer, a key factor in the success of iPhone, and accusing Apple of trying to hitch a "free ride" on Nokia's technology investment.
Sony optical drives probed by anti-trust watchdog
TOKYO - Sony Corp <6758.T> said on Monday that its U.S. optical disc drive operations are under investigation for possible violations of anti-trust regulations, and indicated that other regulators could follow suit. Sony Optiarc America, which supplies a lineup of optical disc drives, including those for DVDs, CD-ROMs, CD-Rs and Blu-ray discs, has received a subpoena from the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust division, a Sony spokesman said.
Busy U.S. cell networks a bonanza for gear makers
CHICAGO - Dropped calls may be annoying to a mobile phone user but network equipment makers and operators are eyeing a big payday from congested cellphone networks. Flashy smartphones like Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone, which allow downloads of everything from games to stock prices, are straining mobile networks and pushing carriers to upgrade wired broadband connections to cell towers, known as backhaul.
Shrimp's eye points way to better DVDs
LONDON - The amazing eyes of a giant shrimp living on Australia's Great Barrier Reef could hold the key to developing a new type of super high-quality DVD player, British scientists said on Sunday. Mantis shrimps, dubbed "thumb splitters" by divers because of their vicious claws, have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom.
Nokia says N900 sales delayed to November
HELSINKI - Top cellphone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> said on Friday its flagship N900 phone will start selling in November, a month later than originally scheduled, as the company awaits feedback from developers. The N900 -- seen as key for Nokia's future in the high-end of the market -- is the company's first phone running on Linux software.

Microsoft launches Windows 7, eyes PC sales rebound
NEW YORK - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> launched Windows 7 on Thursday, its most important release in more than a decade, aiming to win back customers disappointed by Vista and strengthen its grip on the PC market. The world's largest software company, which powers more than 90 percent of personal computers, has received good reviews for the new operating system, which it hopes will grab back the impetus in new technology from rivals Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and Google Inc <GOOG.O>.
Lenovo expects big PC sales boost from Windows 7
SHANGHAI - Lenovo <0992.HK>, the world's fourth-biggest personal computer maker, expects a boost in its PC sales from the launch of Microsoft's <MSFT.O> new operating system, Windows 7, its chairman said on Saturday. "It will have a big impact, and we have made a lot of preparations for it," Lenovo Chairman Liu Chuanzhi said in remarks, translated from Mandarin, which indicated the impact would be positive.
