The multi-year deal with the 26-year-old Woodley, who has been a dominating presence on the Steelers defense since the team drafted him back in 2007, is reportedly worth $61.5 million. It includes a $22.5 million bonus that will significantly reduce Woodley’s previous salary cap number. Early this year, the Steelers applied the franchise tag on Woodley prior to the lockout; which could have translated to about $10 million counted against the salary cap. The new deal would make Woodley, who helped the Steelers capture Super Bowl XLIII, the highest paid player on defense and second-highest on the team behind only quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Incidentally, Roethlisberger is one of several Steelers who agreed to a restructuring of contract to help free up the salary cap space of the defending AFC champions under the new CBA. Last season, Woodley recorded 10 sacks with 50 tackles, helping the Steelers reach their second Super Bowl during his tenure in Pittsburgh. Woodley, selected in the second round of the 2007 Draft by Pittsburgh after a sterling career at the University of Michigan, set a Steelers record with 39 sacks in his first four seasons.
