Nokia and Microsoft join forces in smartphone war
LONDON - Nokia <NOK1V.HE> and Microsoft <MSFT.O> teamed up on Friday to build an iPhone killer in a desperate attempt to take on Google and Apple in the fast-growing smartphone market. Nokia said using Microsoft's Windows Phone software in its smartphones would speed up new product launches, but shares in the world's largest cellphone maker fell sharply on uncertainty about the financial impact of new chief executive Stephen Elop's strategic u-turn.
Apple working on smaller, cheaper iPhone: report
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> is working on a smaller and less expensive version of the iPhone, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing sources. The prototype device is about one-third smaller than the iPhone 4, the report said, citing a person who had seen it.
Facebook mulls $1 billion employee share sale: report
SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook may let its employees sell up to $1 billion of their shares to institutional investors at a price that values the company at about $60 billion, an influential industry blog reported. Facebook is pondering the move after entertaining approaches from a number of major institutions interested in investing in the world's largest social network, the All Things Digital technology blog cited sources as saying on Thursday.
Verizon iPhone launch greeted by shorter lines
NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Verizon Wireless' new iPhone drew sparse crowds on Thursday, a far cry from the mania that usually surrounds a nationwide Apple Inc <AAPL.O> product debut. The No. 1 U.S. wireless carrier had prepared for a huge turnout for its kick-off of store sales of the iPhone, but it still had supplies in stock by the afternoon.
2011 could be dream year for tech-toy lovers
NEW YORK - A stunt car powered by light. Check. A table-top version of a popular iPhone game. Check. A battery-powered sweet-talking boyfriend doll. Check. These are some of the items the U.S. toy industry hopes will help it rebound from a lackluster holiday sales season in which demand petered out after a strong start.
Google in talks to buy video maker Next New: source
NEW YORK - Google Inc's YouTube is in talks to buy video producer Next New Networks, in a move to improve the quality of videos available on the site and drive advertising revenue, according to a person familiar with the discussions. Privately held Next New Networks is best known as the producer of Web comedy shows like "Barely Political" whose video "I've Got a Crush on Obama" was a huge hit in 2008, gaining coverage on mainstream TV shows like "Saturday Night Live."
Ebay points to PayPal momentum, pledges innovation
SAN JOSE, California - EBay Inc <EBAY.O> thrust its PayPal business into the limelight on Thursday, saying the online payments unit would surpass its main marketplaces division within three to five years as executives cast the Web company as an innovator. Shares of eBay, which over the past two years has sought to shed an image of an Internet has-been, jumped nearly 8 percent during an investor meeting at eBay's San Jose, California headquarters, after executives said PayPal revenue could double by 2013.
Cisco's consumer business group chief to depart
NEW YORK - The head of Cisco Systems Inc's <CSCO.O> consumer business group and the former chief of the "Flip" video camera maker is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities. Jonathan Kaplan, the former CEO of Pure Digital, which Cisco bought for close to $600 million in May 2009, will be leaving Cisco to pursue other career opportunities, Cisco said in a blogpost.
Beijing moves to tighten rare earth production
BEIJING - China has created a "state planning" zone covering the country's biggest rare earth mines in a move to cut production of the vital rare mineral elements used for numerous high-tech goods, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday night. Exploration and mining of rare earth resources in the zone, an area of 2,500 square kilometers of Jiangxi province in southern China that contains 760,000 metric tons of rare earth mineral deposits, will be subject to stricter state scrutiny and regulatory checks, Xinhua said, citing the Ministry of Land and Resources in Beijing.
Qualcomm unveils new chip aimed at tablets
SAN FRANCISCO - Qualcomm Inc <QCOM.O> said on Thursday that its newest dual-core processor was designed to compete in the red-hot tablet market against Texas Instruments and smaller rival Nvidia, which has dominated design wins in early 2011. Qualcomm's APQ8060 dual-core Snapdragon processor is being used in Hewlett-Packard Co's <HPQ.N> "TouchPad", which was unveiled on Wednesday.
