ADVERTISEMENT "I spoke to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd this morning about greater cooperation and finding the best solution," he added. "There is an increase in the number of migrants because of the situation in their countries, as well as the global crisis. We hope to work together with many countries, including Malaysia," Yudhoyono said. There are now 2,000 migrants in Indonesia, 600 of whom arrived between January and April, mostly from Afghanistan, he added. In their telephone conversation, the two leaders promised to intensify bilateral cooperation, presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal told AFP. "They talked about the dramatic increase in the number of migrants coming from countries like Afghanistan, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, among others. This has become a serious issue nationally and regionally," he added. "They're happy with how the police in the two countries have been cooperating, sharing information and carrying out coordinating action," Djalal said. The leaders also expressed satisfaction at the success of last week's so-called Bali Process on people smuggling, people trafficking and related transnational crime, he added. "They believe in a regional solution to handle this regional problem, as it involves countries of origin, transit and destination," Djalal said. Indonesia has long been a transit country for illegal migration and people smuggling to Australia. At least three people died and another two are missing presumed dead after an explosion Thursday on board an illegal smuggling vessel carrying mainly Afghan refugees off Australia's northwest coast. Dozens more were injured. Meanwhile, 68 Afghan migrants were arrested in Indonesia Friday as they prepared to depart illegally for Australia, the second such group arrested there in recent months.
