Google investors worry about future growth
NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> shares shed earlier gains as confidence that CEO Larry Page would rejuvenate the No. 1 Internet search company wavered. Shares of Google, which gained 2 percent following Thursday's better-than-expected quarterly results and the news that Page would replace Eric Schmidt as chief executive, were down $1.08 at $625.69 in midday trading on Friday.
Analysis: EA wins new friends with social, mobile games
NEW YORK - Electronic Arts <ERTS.O>, hurt by an industry-wide slump in video game sales, wants to become a big player in a new game -- social and mobile media. EA is the top publisher of games by revenue on Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad and iPhone, and is concentrating more on its digital business. Sales of the more costly packaged games, like its "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" golf game, have taken a beating since the beginning of the recession.
Sprint seen adding subscribers, at least in the fourth quarter
NEW YORK - Sprint Nextel <S.N> is expected to reward long-suffering investors with its first quarterly subscriber growth in more than three years, but the celebration may be short-lived. Gains in the 2010 fourth quarter would be a milestone for Chief Executive Dan Hesse in his bid to turn around the No. 3 U.S. mobile service, but analysts say customers losses will likely resume in the current quarter.

Apple tightens the screws on iPhone 4: sources
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> is giving a whole new meaning to locking your phone with its new screws. In line with its infamous philosophy of maintaining absolute control over its products, sources said U.S. Apple stores are replacing screws on iPhone 4s brought for servicing with tamper-proof screws to prevent anyone else from opening the device.
Lenovo and NEC in talks to combine PC businesses: sources
TOKYO - China's Lenovo Group <0992.HK> is in talks with Japan's NEC Corp <6701.T> for a joint venture in personal computers, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said, in a deal that would help them take on larger global rivals. The Nikkei business daily said Lenovo planned to take a controlling interest in NEC's PC unit. But a buy-out might be a delicate move as Japan eyes China's growing clout, and sources told Reuters it was not clear what form the partnership might eventually take.
Leadership worries hang over chipmaker AMD
SAN FRANCISCO - Concerns about Advanced Micro Devices Inc <AMD.N> roll-out of its new PC chips hung over its shares, despite the company's expectations of a better-than-seasonal first quarter. AMD's stock fell 5.24 percent to $7.60 as investors worried that early production and sales of new chips, including the upcoming 32 nanometer Llano processor might go less smoothly after chief executive Dirk Meyer abruptly left last week, despite assurances by the company.
Verizon sees $600 million accounting change charge
NEW YORK - Verizon Communications Inc <VZ.N> plans to report a $600 million charge for the full year 2010 due to a change in the way it accounts for retirement benefits, following the lead of rival AT&T Inc. <T.N> Like AT&T, Verizon said on Friday it is looking to make its financials easier to understand by changing its pension accounting to recognize gains and losses in the year they are incurred, rather than amortizing them over time.
HP shakes up board, adds Meg Whitman and 4 others
SAN FRANCISCO - Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> is shaking up a board criticized by many as dysfunctional, bringing in five new directors including former eBay <EBAY.O> chief Meg Whitman, as new CEO Leo Apotheker remakes the company. HP's board had for years come under fire from shareholders and business leaders such as Oracle's Larry Ellison, most recently after it forced out Mark Hurd as CEO in controversial fashion.
Ex-banker linked to WikiLeaks to be held in custody over weekend
ZURICH - The Swiss prosecutor's office said on Friday former banker Rudolf Elmer would be detained over the weekend after police questioned him this week over possible fresh breaches of Swiss bank law. Elmer was taken into custody by police on Wednesday after he handed over computer discs to WikiLeaks earlier this week. Elmer indicated the CDs contained details of as many as 2,000 offshore bank accounts.
