Nokia Siemens buys Motorola network ops for $1.2 billion
HELSINKI - Nokia Siemens Networks will buy Motorola's telecom network equipment business for $1.2 billion, in an effort to add mew customers in markets such as Japan and North America where it has been seeking growth. The idea is that a bigger Nokia Siemens Networks -- a venture of Nokia <NOK1V.HE> and Siemens <SIEGn.DE> -- would compete better than either company could have alone against rivals Sweden's Ericsson <ERICb.ST>, China's Huawei <HWT.UL> and France's Alcatel-Lucent <ALUA.PA>.
Jobs' offer of free iPhone cases eases PR woes: analysts
Bangalore - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> Chief Executive Steve Jobs' offer of free phone cases mitigates the public relations damage the iPhone 4 antenna issue has caused, analysts said. The problem with the antenna -- a software glitch that overstated network signal strength in the iPhone 4 -- hurt the U.S. technology giant's image as well as its stock, which is down 7 percent since June 28.
Apple expands iPad sales to 9 more countries
BOSTON - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> plans to start selling the iPad tablet PC, its latest hit product, in nine new international markets on Friday, making the device available in a total of 19 countries. The new markets are Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore. Apple had previously said it would add those countries some time during July.
Nuance plans voice-activated iPhone apps for UK
LONDON - Speech-recognition software maker Nuance <NUAN.O> is launching software apps for the Apple <AAPL.O> iPhone in Britain as the company grows more confident that its voice-to-text technology is ready for global markets. Nuance's Dragon Search allows users to search the Web by speaking words into the phone instead of typing, while Dragon Dictation records a message of up to 30 seconds that can be sent as text or email.
Baidu promotes fake drug sites-Chinese TV station
SHANGHAI/SAN FRANCISCO - A report by China's state-run television station accusing Baidu Inc <BIDU.O> of promoting counterfeit drugs through its Web search engine should not prove as damaging as a 2008 TV critique that triggered a 40 percent decline in Baidu's shares, analysts said on Monday. Shares of Baidu, which fell as much as 4 percent on Monday, were down 1.7 percent at $72.26 at mid-afternoon on Nasdaq.
Samsung says no significant smartphone signal complaints
SEOUL - Samsung Electronics Co <005930.KS> said on Monday that it has received no significant complaints related to smartphone signal reception after Apple <AAPL.O> said the issue was shared by the entire smartphone industry. At a rare conference on Friday, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs rejected any suggestion the iPhone 4's design was flawed and said the industry shared the reception problem, specifically naming rivals Samsung, Research in Motion <RIM.TO> and Taiwan's HTC Corp <2498.TW>.
LG aims to up 3D notebook shipments by 30 percent
SEOUL - South Korea's LG Electronics Inc <066570.KS> said on Monday it aimed to raise shipments of 3D notebook computers by 30 percent in 2011, as it makes a huge bet on booming sales of 3D products led by televisions. LG, the world's second-largest maker of TVs, forecast global sales of 3D notebook computers would increase five fold next year to 1.1 million units and jump to 13.8 million units by 2015.
Motorola nears unit sale to Nokia Siemens: source
PHILADELPHIA - Motorola Inc <MOT.N> is close to selling most of its wireless-network equipment business to Nokia Siemens Networks <NOKI.UL> for $1.2 billion, a source familiar with the matter said on Sunday. Nokia Siemens Network, a joint venture of Finland's Nokia Corp <NOK1V.HE> and Germany's Siemens AG <SIEGn.DE>, would buy Motorola's network unit under the deal, which could be announced as early as Monday, the source said.

RIM says Apple claims about BlackBerry unacceptable
TORONTO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> appears to be deliberately distorting the issues surrounding the iPhone 4's antenna design by asserting that Research In Motion's <RIM.TO><RIMM.O> BlackBerry has similar reception problems, RIM said. "Apple's attempt to draw RIM into Apple's self-made debacle is unacceptable," RIM co-Chief Executives Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie said in a statement emailed late Friday.
