Described by many as the best badminton player ever, Lin's feisty character, undoubted talent and good looks make him one of the biggest names in Chinese sport and one of the most high-profile competitors in Guangzhou. The 27-year-old's pin-up status also reflects how popular badminton is in China, which boasts a formidable national team bursting with many of the best male and female players in the world. Lin's trophy cabinet is proof that he is far more than just a pretty face: he is an Olympic gold medallist and three-time world championship winner, to mention just a few of the dozens of titles he has swaggered his way to. It is not for nothing that his fans have given him the title "Super Dan". His game is based on speed and a high tempo, while his spectacular jump smash is his signature move. The tournaments he has won down the years suggests he particularly revels in playing in front of the home Chinese fans. Lin is well known for celebrating emphatic or particularly satisfying victories by tossing his shirt into the crowd and doing an on-court jig, but he can be surly and ungracious in defeat, shunning media interviews. And if the purists sometimes question is on-court antics, there are also question marks about whether -- after winning so many tournaments -- the charismatic left-hander still has the focus and appetite to keep on going. "What more do I want to prove my worth?" Lin said after beating Lee Chong Wei, the world number one from Malaysia, at the Thomas Cup finals in Kuala Lumpur this year. Lee, Lin's old foe, is also in Guangzhou and represents a serious challenge to Lin's gold medal ambitions. The Chinese shuttler is down in the world rankings because so little has been seen of him on the 2010 Super Series circuit. He missed the first pair of Super Series of the year, in South Korea and Malaysia, departed from the quarter-finals of the second two, in England and in Switzerland, and took no part in the next two, in Singapore and Indonesia, along with others in the Chinese national squad. In August, he surrendered his world title in meek fashion in Paris, going down to Korean Park Sung-Hwan 21-13, 21-13 in the quarters, then he lost to Lee in the final at the Japan Open in September. However, Rapahel Sachetat, chief editor of the Badzine website (www.badzine.net), said he did not expect that poor run to continue. "On his day he's better than anyone else in the world," Sachetat told AFP. "He's won more titles than anyone else, but not an Asian Games singles gold, and he will be very, very difficult to beat, especially in China. "He really wants to win the Asian Games gold and he's free of pressure as he's won everything else." The badminton competition begins on November 13.
