James Franco "surprised" to be Oscar co-host
NEW YORK - James Franco, who barely hit Hollywood's A-list of actors before landing the coveted job of co-hosting the upcoming Oscars, said in an interview he was just as surprised as anybody that he was offered the job. The 32-year-old actor told Entertainment Weekly magazine in an interview published on Monday that he first said "no" when Oscar producer Bruce Cohen asked him to co-host with Anne Hathaway when the top movie honors are given out February 27.
Oscar contenders jockey for position
LOS ANGELES - And they're off. And it's The King's Speech in the lead. No, wait, it's The Social Network by a nose. Hold on, The Fighter is coming up fast on the inside track. As the 2010 awards race turns into the backstretch -- the fall film festivals have come and gone, Golden Globe, Critics' Choice and SAG nominations have been unveiled, critics groups have begun to weigh in -- none of the contenders has broken from the pack. At the moment, there's some genuine suspense.
Jeff Bridges reveals his "True Grit"
LOS ANGELES - Nearly a year after his Oscar win for best actor, Jeff Bridges has gained awards buzz again, teaming up with his "The Big Lebowski" directors, Joel and Ethan Coen, in "True Grit." The film, due out in theaters on Wednesday, shows off Bridges' acting chops in the role of drunken U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn in the post-Civil War era Western, a 180-degree turn from his recent role as a tech-whiz trapped in a computer grid of his own making in the futuristic "Tron: Legacy."
"Tron" leads weak pack of newcomers at box office
LOS ANGELES - "Tron: Legacy," a costly 3D sci-fi movie that Walt Disney Co has promoted for more than three years, opened disappointingly at the weekend box office in North America, while a new comedy starring Reese Witherspoon was one of the biggest flops of the year. The "Tron" movie, a massively hyped sequel to an obscure 1982 movie, earned $43.6 million during its first three days of release, Disney said Sunday. Industry observers had been expecting a three-day start in the $50 million range, although Disney said the opening was within its own expectations.
Rockers hit right note with MTV for 2011
NEW YORK - Rock is dead? Long live rock. The Who sang it in 1974, but they might have been talking about 2011, at least according to MTV. The cable TV music channel on Monday releases its "2011 Artists to Watch" list of the next big acts in music, and after years of seeing rap and hip-hop acts dominate the chart, a movement back to rock 'n' roll is afoot.
Underground actors seek last act for Belarus leader
MINSK - Deep snow smothered the noise. Only fresh footprints leading to the tumbledown house in a suburb of the Belarussian capital Minsk betrayed life behind its boarded-up windows. Inside, actors strutted and pounced barefoot on black floorboards while the tiny audience shared the makeshift stage for the Saturday night performance.
Iran jails film director Panahi for 6 years
TEHRAN - An Iranian court has sentenced acclaimed film director Jafar Panahi to six years in prison and banned him from making movies or traveling abroad for 20 years, his lawyer was quoted as saying on Monday. Panahi, winner of many international awards and a supporter of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi in last year's disputed presidential election, was arrested in early March. He was kept in detention for 88 days, during which he went on a hunger strike.
"Inception," Johnny Depp hits with IMDB.com users
LOS ANGELES - "Inception" really got into the minds of users at IMDB.com. The movie database website on Monday released its annual list of top 25 films and top 25 stars of 2010, as determined by its users' search behavior, votes and rankings.
"Silent Night" most recorded UK Christmas song
LONDON - Christmas carol "Silent Night" has topped the list of Britain's "most recorded Christmas song of all time," according to music licensing company PPL. The 190-year-old Austrian carol beat more recent festive compositions such as "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland" to the top spot in a list of more than 170 recordings, PPL said in a statement Monday.
Michael Bolton sings for the saints in Assisi
ASSISI, Italy - Michael Bolton has gone from Dancing with the Stars to singing for the saints. "I feel humbled here," Bolton said after recording the traditional Christmas concert in the frescoed basilica of St Francis of Assisi with Israeli singer Noa and New York conductor Steven Mercurio.
