Australia jails Indonesian for people smuggling

 AP - Saturday, April 4
PERTH, Australia - An Indonesian fisherman was sentenced Friday to at least three years in prison for attempting to smuggle 14 Afghans into Australia.

Amos Ndolo, 58, pleaded guilty in Perth District Court to illegally transporting the 14 people into Australian waters.
Ndolo was the captain of a sinking vessel intercepted by the Australian navy at an offshore storage rig in the Timor Sea on Oct. 6, 2008. The three Indonesian crewmen and 14 passengers were taken into Australian custody for questioning.
The court was told that the Afghans had paid a smuggling ring to travel to Australia and that Ndolo accepted a payment from the smugglers to transport them to Australia.
He received a five-year sentence with a no-parole period of three years.
Judge Catherine O'Brien said Ndolo was a small player in a highly organized people-smuggling ring but that his sentence would serve as a deterrent.
"Without minimizing the offense and your part in it, it would seem you are a victim of the despicable recruiting of poor fishermen to take risky journeys across the seas for a small amount of money," O'Brien said. "It is important for the court to deal strongly with everyone who plays a part in bringing illegal immigrants to Australia."
Ndolo told the court he was sorry and accepted the sentence.
The maximum penalty for people smuggling is 20 years in jail.
Ndolo is the second Indonesian in two months to be convicted in an Australian court of people smuggling.
In March, Indonesian boat captain Abdul Hamid received a six-year sentence for trying to bring 12 asylum seekers to Australia. He was also given a three-year no-parole period.
