Beatles, Rolling Stones ex-manager Allen Klein dies
AFP - Sunday, July 5
NEW YORK (AFP) - - Record label mogul and Allen Klein, who fell in and out of favor with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, died after battling Alzheimer's disease, his spokesman said. He was 77.
The often-controversial Klein, whose clients also included Sam Cooke, the Animals, Herman's Hermits and Bobby Darin, "understood the music business from the inside out," ABKCO Music & Records publicist Bob Merlis told AFP.
Known for striking advantageous deals, but also for ostracizing some of his biggest patrons, Klein founded Allen Klein & Co. in the late 1950s. ABKCO has since grown to become one of the world's top independent record companies.
Merlis said the company would remain controlled by the family, with son Jody retaining his post as head of ABKCO.
The firm's music publishing division holds over 2,000 copyrights, including songs by such music greats as Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Bobby Womack, Ray Davies and Pete Townshend.
The New Jersey-born accountant first shot to fame after helping secure an unprecedented lucrative recording arrangement with Cooke in the early 1960s.
"This was completely unheard of -- for an African-American to have artistic self-determination and economic self-determination," said Merlis, noting that the deal with RCA Records granted the soul star artistic control and ownership of his own masters through Tracey Records, a label Klein set up.
Throughout his career of over 50 years, Klein was known for bulldozing his way through deals, representing the Rolling Stones and later the Beatles in arrangements that eventually spun into lawsuits.
Klein, who represented the Beatles in the final months before their breakup in 1970, helped the legendary pop group secure re-negotiations between Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI in 1969 that landed what was at the time the largest ever royalty rate paid to an artist.
A disagreement among the Beatles over bringing Klein onboard eventually led to a battle in court before the group split up. Klein nonetheless later continued to work with John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono.
He tried -- and failed -- to gain control of copyrights for the Beatles on their behalf. But it was Michael Jackson who eventually secured the lucrative rights in a 47.5-million-dollar deal in 1985 that included classics like "Let it Be."
Despite being convicted of tax fraud in 1979 for not reporting income from the sales of several promotional records and serving two months in prison, Klein's success did not take a hit.
When his relationship with the Stones ended, he retained rights to some of the group's biggest hits, including "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."
In addition to managing music, Klein co-produced "The Concert for Bangladesh" with former Beatle lead guitarist George Harrison, a precursor to today's charity concerts.
He also produced a handful of films, including "The Greek Tycoon," which starred Jacqueline Bisset and Anthony Quinn, and Alejandro Jodorowsky's cult classics "El Topo" and "Holy Mountain."
Klein is survived by his longtime companion Iris Keitel, his wife Betty, three children, four grandchildren and a sister.
The company said funeral services would be held in New York on Tuesday at the Riverside Memorial Chapel.
