Sri Lankan committee to answer abuse allegations

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – A Sri Lankan minister says that a committee is being set up to respond to allegations of war time abuses contained in a U.S. State Department report last week.
Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said Monday that the president will appoint a committee to study abuses mentioned in the report, such as attacks on civilians and hospitals during the country's civil war.
The report accused both the Sinhalese-dominated government and the Tamil Tiger rebels of actions that could be described as war crimes.
According to U.N. figures about 7,000 civilians were killed in fighting this year before government forces routed the rebels in May.
