SEOUL, March 8 - As of 0431 GMT, the main KOSPI <.KS11> was up 1.23 percent at 2,004.61 points. The index opened up 0.19 percent at 1,984.08 points.

Stocks on the move on Tuesday include:

** LG UPLUS SURGES ON BARGAIN-HUNTING, BETTER OUTLOOK **

Shares in South Korea's smallest mobile carrier LG Uplus <032640.KS> soared as investors snapped up beaten-down shares and on expectations that it was regaining smartphone competitiveness.

" reflects a technical rebound as well as a perspective that the stock is now very cheap," David Lee, an analyst at CLSA, said.

"The stock has bottomed out and all the bad news has been reflected," he said.

LG Uplus shares tumbled last year as the No.3 mobile operator was struggling to compete with bigger rivals SK Telecom <017670.KS> and KT <030200.KS> in the fast-growing smartphone segment, hit by a lack of smartphones models and network competitiveness.

"Its marketing costs went up so high because it had to spend more money on feature phone subscribers to retain its market share... But its earnings bottomed out in the fourth quarter of last year," Lee said, noting that LG Uplus is beefing up its smartphone models and networks.

LG Uplus shares rose 7.64 percent against the broader market that was up 1.23 percent as of 0431 GMT.
