Studio pushes up Jackson film, Ortega to direct
ADVERTISEMENT
LOS ANGELES - The studio behind the Michael Jackson film "This Is It" on Thursday advanced its release by two days to October 28, anticipating huge demand for the movie of his final performance rehearsals just days before his death. Sony Pictures Entertainment said choreographer Kenny Ortega, who worked with the pop star throughout his career, will direct the movie, which will combine footage of the singer's rehearsals for the "This Is It" concerts that were to have begun in London last month.
New Norah Jones album due in November
NEW YORK - Singer-songwriter Norah Jones will move away from jazz roots on her fourth studio album. The Blue Note Records release is due in November, the label announced Thursday.
"Twilight" author sued for copyright infringement
LOS ANGELES - A woman who wrote an obscure vampire book as a teenager has sued "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer, accusing her of stealing ideas from the work for the fourth book in her vampire series, "Breaking Dawn." Meyer's publisher responded that the lawsuit, filed on Wednesday in federal court in California, is a meritless claim meant to further the career of the aspiring screenwriter making the complaint.
"Lad rock" kings Kasabian reject Oasis tag
TOKYO - British band Kasabian have the local bomb squad's number on speed dial, but the new kings of "lad rock" insist their hell-raising days are behind them. Short-listed for the prestigious Mercury Prize after their third album, "West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum," recently topped the charts, the psychedelic rockers flatly reject comparisons to another, globally successful all-male British band that also has its fair share of awards: Oasis.
Robert Zemeckis circles "Yellow Submarine" remake
LOS ANGELES - Robert Zemeckis is in negotiations to direct a remake of the 1968 animated Beatles feature "Yellow Submarine" for the Walt Disney Studios. Disney had no comment on the deal. Still being sorted out is the acquisition of rights to the film's music, which includes the title track as well as "Eleanor Rigby," "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "With a Little Help From My Friends."
Cyrus scores Hot 100 best; Peas, Mraz make history
LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK - The Black Eyed Peas and Jason Mraz have made history on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, while Miley Cyrus and Jay-Z entered the list's top 10. With a combined 20 weeks at No. 1 for current chart topper "I Gotta Feeling" and previous No. 1 "Boom Boom Pow," the Black Eyed Peas have broken the record for the longest stay for an act atop the chart. The previous record-holder was Usher, who had a 19-week run in 2004 with "Yeah!" and "Burn."
Q&A: Mraz humbled by success of "little hippie song"
NEW YORK - Jason Mraz entered the record books this week with his single "I'm Yours," which notched an extraordinary 70th week on the Hot 100. The track debuted on the May 3, 2008, chart and peaked at No. 6 nearly a year ago, on September 20, 2008. The song has resided within the top 40 of the list in all but the first 12 weeks of its chart life, dropping from No. 23 to No. 29 on the latest tally.
Jackson Brothers reality series a go at A&E
NEW YORK - Before Michael Jackson died, his brothers filmed a one-hour pilot for A&E that was supposed to include a reunion performance with Michael. But he never agreed to it, didn't do it, and died before it could be discussed again. But sources say that A&E will go forward with a series of further episodes that will chronicle the Jackson brothers' lives and show them grappling with Michael's death.
Just A Minute With: Jon Cryer on his new "Shorts"
LOS ANGELES - Jon Cryer first found fame in 1984 with a starring role opposite Demi Moore in "No Small Affair," and then as one of the leading actors in John Hughes' teen comedy "Pretty in Pink." While most of his contemporaries have long since faded away, Cryer has quietly built himself one of the most respected and successful careers in Hollywood, earning four consecutive Emmy nominations for his performance as Alan Harper in CBS's top-rated comedy series "Two and a Half Men."
Jay Leno says new comedy show is "a lot more work"
LOS ANGELES - After 17 years of late night TV chat, Jay Leno says he's working harder than ever to fill his eagerly-anticipated new prime-time show with comedy. "It's a lot of material to fill. It is a lot of jokes. This is lot more work. A lot more work. You're doing probably three shows worth of comedy every night," Leno told reporters on Wednesday.
